#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History - 30th December 1997 - Post #8662

Hiya lovelies! It’s Emma here, your resident tutu-loving, pink-obsessed, ballet-mad blogger, ready to whisk you off on a whirlwind journey through time! Buckle up your pointe shoes, grab a pink feather boa, and let’s go!

This week, our #TutuTuesday adventure takes us back to the 30th of December, 1997. A blustery day in London, but I tell you, darling, the sheer excitement of seeing the iconic The Nutcracker performance at the Royal Opera House warmed me right up!

Now, imagine a scene – a packed theatre, anticipation buzzing in the air. The orchestra plays Tchaikovsky’s magical music. A giant Christmas tree shimmers on stage. The ballet opens, and poof! You're instantly transported to a land of Sugarplums and snow-dusted landscapes. Can you even imagine? I'm still getting goosebumps just thinking about it!

Speaking of the The Nutcracker … what an absolutely stunning ballet! I mean, tutus galore, my dears! It's just so 19th century, you see? Think lavish velvet, lace, silk, and feathers… the absolute dream! But I digress!

This trip took me to the very heart of London – a bustling, glamorous city full of incredible ballet companies, exciting performances, and, oh my, the fashion! (Don’t even get me started on the millinery – absolute masterpieces!). And trust me, London was just bursting with those gorgeous tulle tutus we know and love. It was practically raining them in the streets!

Let's talk a bit about the tutu evolution, shall we? In the Victorian era, tutus were just starting to gain their full-on fairytale look. They were quite grand, full of drama, layers, and those lovely bulky romantic bodices with tons of details. I'm talking ribbons, ruffles, flowers… all that pretty frippery! But oh, they were definitely not designed for practical dance movements, no siree! It was more about a lovely silhouette, not the dynamic leaps and pirouettes of today.

Fast forward to 1997, the * tutu* is evolving beautifully, adapting for contemporary choreography. The ballerina's movement, expression, and physical strength are all key aspects now – imagine a perfect blend of classical elegance with dynamic athleticism! Think of how tutus have had to move along with our ever-changing vision of ballet, right?!

Now, while you lovely lot may be rocking tutus to the ballet studios, remember, tutu is about SO much more!

Think of the amazing street dance tutu outfits (they can look so chic!) and then, of course, there are those unforgettable stage shows - everything from pop princesses rocking tutus to grand productions in those enormous, beautiful tutu gowns! Don’t even get me started on the fashion tutus… they’re like a dream come true!

Oh! Did I tell you about my amazing dress for the The Nutcracker? It was a dazzling, bright pink satin ballgown, complete with a voluminous skirt made from layers upon layers of fluffy tulle! With sparkly pink shoes, it was the perfect outfit for a festive ballet night out.

See, that's the beauty of tutus, darling - adaptable!

My pink tutu outfit, for example, wasn't a traditional ballet costume. It was an exciting, edgy take on classic ballet with an extravagant touch of glamour, just perfect for celebrating the amazing world of ballet. It made everyone in the train station turn and gaze! That was certainly an unexpected bonus.

Honestly, dear readers, every time I travel through time, I fall even deeper in love with this fantastical world of tutus. From the classic Romantics of the 19th century, to those sassy and fun contemporary designs today, every era holds its own distinct charm, but one thing’s certain, dear hearts – we're all connected through this magical fabric!

If you ever get the chance, you must attend a performance of The Nutcracker! The enchanting music, breathtaking dancing, and incredible scenery will simply whisk you away! And don’t forget to check out my next blog, where we will be talking about...

Oh, wait, what’s that you say? You want to learn about how to travel through time? Oh, darling, you have a very inquisitive mind. But that is a tale for another day, another blog post… maybe… on my special new website about travelling through time by tutu

Until then, darlings, be sure to share your thoughts in the comments, tag me in your own pink tutu pictures (#TutuTuesday), and be sure to keep twirling and shining all week long!

And remember, the best way to stay positive and fashionable? Embrace the pink!

Love, Emma
