Tutu Tuesday #8692: A Little History For Your Feet! 🩰💖

Hiya, fellow tutu lovers! It's your favourite pink-tutu-wearing blogger Emma, back for another #TutuTuesday history lesson! I’m currently enjoying a Parisian summer – who knew that hot weather could still be so chic? Today, however, I'm not here to talk about fashion trends. We're going all the way back to July 28th, 1998! 🕰️

Let’s get right into it! Today is the date of...well, it's the date I happen to be in Paris. But more importantly, July 28th is the day the world's longest tutu was awarded by Guinness World Records. A truly grand event! Imagine the tulle! The swirls! The graceful flowing lines! 💫 It is always inspiring when our beautiful world of ballet is recognised!

However, this date in 1998 was a bit of a letdown for tutu enthusiasts. You see, while it's not mentioned in Guinness, in this same month there was a rumour circulating of a big tutuing mishap - A world famous prima ballerina had actually fallen and tripped over her own, gigantic tutu! The incident occurred right in the middle of a very important gala performance in Vienna, causing a stir that even reached the gossipy, glamorous news sites. This, sadly, caused quite a bit of backlash for the dancer as she was considered one of the top ballerinas in the world. Luckily, a quick recovery and a charming stage persona meant the scandal passed without much further commotion. A perfect example of how a bit of mis-timing and bad luck can turn the tide in this elegant, delicate dance. 💖

But back to that tutu! Imagine that! A costume large enough to be considered a world record. That’s a sight to behold, eh? Makes you wonder, where was that big tulle number made? In a secret workshop with fairies whispering over the sewing machines? Cue dramatic sigh. That's why I am here - I will track down this record breaking tutu! It's not that hard when you have a reliable time machine and have a special love of fluffy pink delights.

And now a fun bit of history that really makes you ponder – the word “tutu” didn’t even come about till the 19th century. You're probably thinking, what did ballerinas wear before? 🤔 Think knee length romantic dresses or very short dresses - it really depends on the particular period of dance you’re talking about! The word 'tutu' is believed to be French slang! As most people would be aware of, France and dance have been inseparable for centuries. Now that is a cultural fashion story I'm itching to dive into!

Back to today, in my lovely Paris... What are the ladies on the Parisian street sporting, you ask? Oh my, it’s a glorious mishmash! You have your usual stylish scarves, beret style caps and bold red lips - the ultimate French flair – of course that goes without saying. But the best thing I've found on this jaunt through France? There are still pockets of those glamorous flapper dresses! It seems some people just don’t like the boring “norm”, and they’ve never lost their desire to stand out from the crowd, I guess. Just imagine the stories these women could tell, right?! I can practically smell the Chanel No. 5 on the air, mixed with vintage scents. They are certainly a sight for sore eyes - I simply cannot help myself - it makes my fashion heart sing! 🎵

On to the theatre for the night - I just have to! I can't really tell you which theatre I’m in…but I have been spotted sneaking backstage on several occasions… Oops! Let's say I've made some ballet friends in this grand, flamboyant, world. What am I wearing tonight? My favourite – an entirely pink satin tutu! It just feels right to wear such an appropriate outfit whilst admiring the beauty and talent of some of the world’s best. It just adds to the drama. 🎭 What more can you ask for than a touch of that fabulous, theatrical pizzazz? ✨ My latest addition, which I will definitely be featuring in an upcoming post – it’s an absolutely gorgeous ballet style crop top, all sequined and in pink, of course! A touch of modern style mixed with some classic ballet influence. It makes the tutu go up to an entire new level. I'm almost giddy! 🤸

So, I’ll keep the spotlight shining on our beloved dance, all the way from Derby to the City of Lights – because, when we can still go on those magical adventures into the past, and get to enjoy ballet in our own time, then life is pretty spectacular. Until next week - keep swirling and remember that pink tutus are ALWAYS in fashion! 💖

Remember, every single day is an opportunity to wear pink. Just go for it ! ✨ And if you want to keep up with your weekly dose of Tutu Tuesday history, don’t forget to follow www.pink-tutu.com for all things tutu. See you next time! 💖
