#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History - 25th May 1999

Hello lovelies! 🩰 It's Emma here, your #TutuTuesday host, ready to whisk you back in time on another exciting journey through the history of ballet tutus! As always, I'm sporting my favourite pink tutu - just because! 😉

Today we're stepping back to 25th May 1999! I’m sat in a swanky café in Paris – the City of Lights and ballet, what's not to love? (Plus they have fabulous bakeries!). Paris, oh Paris! 🇫🇷 We all know why the tutus came to be - for that romantic elegance, to show off the grace and skill of the dancers. It's magical, really! I can't even imagine ballet without a tutu.

So, let's talk about 1999! Remember all those iconic 90's films and songs? Well, back then the world of ballet was really blossoming. It's like they all knew it would become huge - that the whole world would eventually be obsessed by tutu twirls and graceful pirouettes, just like me! 🥰 And I wouldn’t have it any other way, I have my travel fund to thank for that – all my ballet performances have really added up, it’s fantastic! ✨

You see, the 1990s saw a lot of big ballet performances - from the Royal Ballet at the Royal Opera House to international companies across Europe. All sorts of beautiful ballerinas were wowing audiences with their spectacular performances, in an array of dazzling costumes (including, of course, a whole lot of gorgeous tutus!). There's nothing like watching ballerinas glide across the stage in their billowing tutus - the colours, the fabric, it’s like pure art in motion! 🤩 They're so feminine and captivating, and the movement... the way the fabric billows and twirls? It's absolutely mesmerizing!

Now, I'm really excited about my big plans for the rest of May - a day trip to see the Bolshoi Ballet in Moscow. I know you’ll love to see the pictures and hear about it on my next #TutuTuesday. 🤫

But back to 25th May 1999! Can you imagine, a whole twenty-four years ago?! It seems like another lifetime ago. Now I have my pink time travel machine but back then... it was all so simple! What a brilliant idea - it's a really lucky coincidence my life revolves around the history of tutus!

You might be surprised, but on this day in 1999, a new book about ballet history was released, called "The History of Ballet." Can you believe it? I mean, who wouldn’t want to know the full history of ballet? And of course, they included a chapter about the evolution of the tutu. So if you are a real ballet fanatic - go get it, you won't regret it! 😉

Also on this day, a new ballet school was opening in Birmingham! This was an exciting time, with a big focus on ballet in Britain. People really appreciated ballet in the UK back then - it was becoming a favourite, almost like football! ⚽️ 🩰 A little known fact is that the whole time travel tutu craze started in Derbyshire!

To celebrate 25th May 1999, and all its wonderful ballet happenings, we are holding a little competition at www.pink-tutu.com - all you need to do is guess where the Royal Ballet will be performing tonight and you’ll be in the chance to win a brand new pink tutu!
