Hiya lovelies! Emma here, back for another Tutu Tuesday with a delightful delve into the history of our favourite frothy friends: the tutus!
This week, we’re taking a magical trip back in time to 27th July, 1999. Hold onto your tiaras, because we’re about to step back into the fascinating world of ballet history and its fascinating fashion evolution!
You know I love to travel, and time travel is truly a privilege. I’ve managed to squeeze in a ballet performance to fund this particular trip, and wouldn’t you know it, I landed in the heart of ballet-loving London!
A Peek into 1999:
On this day, The Royal Ballet is captivating audiences with its dazzling production of The Sleeping Beauty at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. Now, can you imagine a ballet more fitting for Tutu Tuesday than The Sleeping Beauty? That princess is practically born in a tutu!
Of course, the beautiful, delicate tutus from that production were hand-stitched and made with the finest silk. Back in 1999, there were many smaller dance companies, and it was common to have handmade costumes! The passion for ballet fashion, even amongst dancers who don’t wear tutus in every production, is truly something special!
It’s always fascinating to see how styles and fashions have changed through time. In 1999, ballerinas’ looks were elegant and ethereal, with lots of beautiful hairpieces. They often opted for sleek, classic ballet buns adorned with delicate ribbons and intricate combs. Imagine the dedication it takes to be a ballerina, their whole lives are so graceful and disciplined, especially their beautiful hairstyles. They really are quite inspirational.
Of course, a ballerina wouldn’t be complete without a smile. That’s one fashion trend that doesn’t go out of style! Back in 1999, the perfect ballet smile was wide and charming, with a hint of mischievous playfulness. But really, the biggest trend was classic elegance, a look that remains a timeless staple to this day!
Now, I’ve had my fair share of train journeys during my time travels (sometimes for longer than I would prefer!), and luckily, 1999 gave me the opportunity to take a proper afternoon tea experience! Imagine sitting on a comfy seat, sipping on delicious, warm tea with a delicious plate of scrumptious treats… and all in a glamorous setting of vintage teacups. Perfect!
But back to our tutus, darlings! In the world of fashion, everything has a beginning! In the late 19th century, the tutu took its iconic shape – we are all familiar with those romantic billowing skirts!
Can you imagine what would happen if you suddenly showed up in a modern pink tutu back in 1999?! Maybe we’d need to take another trip back, just so I can bring a little more pink tutu magic to the past!
But, back to our modern time! Let’s bring in that vibrant colour and make everyone want to wear a pink tutu, in any form or any time period! What will our next Tutu Tuesday journey be about? Stay tuned and, most importantly, keep the tutus flowing!
