#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History - 1999-12-28 (Post #8766)
Hello lovelies! It's Tuesday again, which means it's time for another fabulous journey through ballet tutu history! Today, we're whisking ourselves back to December 28th, 1999 - just a few days before the turn of the millennium! Fancy a trip down memory lane?
Let's step onto the platform at Euston station, wearing our fabulous pink tutus, of course, and head to the glittering ballet world of 1999! I'm just brimming with excitement, darling! The fashion! The performances! It's a time when tutus were everything, and let's be honest, they still are! 💖
A Glimpse Back in Time
Firstly, picture this: no iPhones or fancy Instagram filters - just pure, unfiltered beauty and grace on the stage. The only filter we used was the perfect blush to accentuate our rosy cheeks! But don't worry, I've still managed to sneak in some snaps to share with you lovely lot.
You'll probably be surprised to learn that on this day, December 28th, 1999, the Royal Ballet, everyone's favourite, was celebrating a Christmas spectacular at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden! You just know the tutus were divine! It must have been a real dream for ballet enthusiasts!
But let's get down to business - the history bit! 1999 saw tutus going through a kind of a makeover! Remember that iconic, super long Romantic tutu we loved? Well, it was taking a step back while shorter, lighter styles, sometimes even a touch more modern, were strutting their stuff. You know what they say - change is always good for the soul - even when it's for ballet tutus!
But... Pink Always Reigns Supreme!
Okay, let me just get this off my chest: while the world was getting all modern, it still felt very much in love with pink tutus, my absolute favourite, naturally! From delicate ballerina pink to fuchsia, and everything in between, it seemed everyone was absolutely smitten with pink - and I certainly wasn't going to complain! I'm sure there were a few tutus adorned with little sequins or sparkly accents too. I love me a bit of glitz! 💖✨
1999 - A Year of Great Performances
But beyond the tutus themselves, 1999 was just a brilliant year for ballet. Can we just take a moment to appreciate that Natalia Osipova, our amazing dancing queen, was starting her glorious career, giving us breathtaking performances all over the world. It’s no surprise she was the favourite amongst ballerinas and ballet lovers alike. Just wait till you see her moves in some of the vintage footage I've been digging out for this blog post - they’ll absolutely floor you!
Speaking of stunning performances, we had a bunch of incredible dancers on the scene! Darcey Bussell was in full flight, she was literally captivating the whole nation with her moves, it was magical! I bet even her own tutus were doing pirouettes when she took to the stage! And of course, we couldn't forget the legendary Rudolf Nureyev, still wowing audiences at every chance he got! We’re lucky enough to see snippets of these glorious moments - the joy of ballet is passed down from generation to generation, it’s something special, truly special!
Time Travel Tips
Now, my lovely lovelies, as I do before each #TutuTuesday blog post, a little time travel tip! Remember: travelling in time isn’t just about fancy trains and stylish tutus (although those are definitely essentials, naturally). It's about enjoying the journey and embracing the history, culture, and the spirit of the era. So, get out there, experience some live ballet shows (I can promise you they’ll sweep you off your feet!), and get that tutu out - wear it with pride!
Till next time, darlings! Remember to share your #TutuTuesday adventures on the www.pink-tutu.com website. I can't wait to see your stylish snaps and stories.
Stay beautiful and never, ever forget to embrace your inner ballerina!
XOXO, Emma

A Bit More Detail on the Magical World of Ballet...Well, we're still here, because there’s simply too much to squeeze into a single blog post! Here are a few little insights about our ballet journey:
- *Shopping in 1999? *Forget online stores, darlings! You had to make a dash to the shops and try on tutus and everything else! Luckily for me, my travels through time means I can get my fix of vintage ballet stores - absolutely nothing beats that authentic, classic, and luxurious shopping experience! I also always loved a little ballet costume store trip – it was the perfect opportunity for a chat with the owner who always seemed to know so much about the latest trends.
- *Fashion, fashion, fashion! *The late 90s, think long flowing skirts with sparkly tops - super stylish! The 90s truly saw an explosion in ballet-inspired street fashion! I love how the ballet world has managed to seep its way into everything! Think a ballet-inspired look paired with your favourite fluffy, pink tutu, and, well, darling, you’ve absolutely got it covered!
- *Going to the ballet, a truly magical experience! * Just the buzz of anticipation, the anticipation building as you make your way to the grand, old theatre building. That magic of being carried away into another world! You know how much I love seeing live performances - the stage is where true magic is created - and you really can’t beat the feeling of a spectacular ballet show. The dancers’ elegance, the choreography, the vibrant music, and the entire ambiance just takes my breath away! And as you know, I absolutely love everything about tutus and that amazing world they conjure.
- *Did someone say London?! * Now, when we’re talking about the perfect place to explore ballet history, London just has to be mentioned. It is truly the hub of everything ballet-related in England! We are just brimming with history. Take the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden, for example - I bet you didn't know this, but it has been standing for over 300 years! They were celebrating the bicentenary in 1999 - so that’s quite the history to take in. Now that's a little piece of ballet heaven! And you just can’t visit the capital without taking in a dazzling ballet performance or strolling past those amazing theatres – you really feel that magical energy.
Now, don’t let me go! I have to head off to the next dance class! Keep those pink tutus flowing! Until next time, my lovely lovelies!
XOXO, Emma 💖
