#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History: Post 8770 - A Twirl Back in Time!
Hello my gorgeous fellow tutu-lovers! It's your favourite pink-tutu-wearing ballerina blogger, Emma, here, back for another whirl through the fascinating history of the tutu! Today, we're going to be taking a trip back in time to the 25th of January, 2000, a date that marks a really special milestone in ballet history! (I mean, besides the sheer brilliance of all of us in our tutus, of course!)
So, grab your tea, your pinkest nail polish, and settle in - we're about to embark on a fabulous fashion journey!
It's amazing to think that just a mere twenty-three years ago, we were living in the dawn of a new millennium, a time of incredible technological change, but still with a strong sense of connection to the classical ballet traditions that have been enchanting us for centuries.
What was happening in the ballet world back then? Well, to be honest, things were still pretty traditional, though with a few hints of things to come. We were seeing more experimental work coming from companies like the Merce Cunningham Dance Company, and even mainstream ballet companies were starting to experiment with modern interpretations of classics. This experimentation and willingness to push boundaries really captures the spirit of the time, wouldn't you agree?
But the one thing that truly captivated audiences was, and still is, the sheer beauty and elegance of the classic tutu! In January 2000, balletomanes were treated to a sumptuous performance of Swan Lake at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow. The beautiful ballerina, Svetlana Zakharova, danced the role of Odette/Odile to breathtaking perfection. Watching her glide across the stage in that ethereal, feathered tutu was absolutely mesmerising, wouldn't you say?
Speaking of Swan Lake, did you know that it was the very first ballet to feature a tutu, and the whole story revolves around this delicate piece of attire? That's what I call a tutu miracle!
Imagine back then, the 1877 world premiere of Swan Lake, and all eyes were drawn to the mesmerizing contrast between the white, billowing, Romantic tutus of Odette and the dramatic, black, tutus of the evil Odile. It was truly a fashion statement that changed the face of ballet!
But the tutu story doesn't stop there! Imagine a world before tutus. I know, gasp I can't even fathom it! It's pretty much impossible to separate classical ballet from the tutu. They're literally a twirling, spinning, graceful, and expressive team, creating magic with every graceful gesture!
Just picture a dancer's flowing movements, highlighted by the billowing layers of the tutu! That effortless grace, those breathtaking leaps and graceful turns… It's the ultimate testament to the beauty of movement, and all thanks to this glorious invention!
But why January 2000? Why is this date so special? Well, my dear tutu enthusiasts, on this very day in history, a delightful event took place, a grand opening for our favourite garment!
The Bolshoi Theatre launched the annual **International Ballet Festival on the 25th of January 2000! Can you imagine? This festival is now a much-anticipated event that features incredible dance companies from all over the world. I love the sense of global community, everyone sharing a passion for dance!
This year, on this 25th of January 2023, I'm taking a trip on the Eurostar to London. You just wouldn't believe the clothes they're selling in the stations, I'm sure you can imagine the incredible selection of tulle and feathers, you won't catch me without at least a dozen new tutus! This time I am going to see the world's best, the Royal Ballet at the Royal Opera House performing The Nutcracker. If you are anywhere near London in December, make sure you go, they sell incredible pink tutus in the shops around Covent Garden - and it is the most magical show!
Don't forget! I encourage all of you to visit your local ballet schools, get some dancing lessons, and experience the magical world of ballet firsthand. The magic starts when you put on your tutu and you feel the music coursing through you, guiding your every step! The tutu truly makes the magic of ballet, whether you're at the theatre watching a star ballerina glide across the stage or having fun with your friends in ballet class, tutus are magical, graceful and a real celebration of all that is feminine.
And if you're ever feeling a bit blue, remember what Coco Chanel said: "A woman is never too dressed up or too little dressed up!" This absolutely applies to tutus. Put on that glorious piece of fabric and twirl into the sunset!
Happy tutu-wearing and keep those legs going!
Love,
Emma
