#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History – Post 8782 – 18th April 2000

Hello my darlings! Welcome back to Pink-Tutu.com! It's your favourite tutu-loving blogger Emma here, ready to whisk you away on a magical journey through time… and what could be more magical than tutus? This week we're taking a trip to the year 2000, oh how exciting! Let’s face it, everyone knows the 2000s were all about glitz, glam and just a touch of sparkle – so it seems only natural that we celebrate this era's most fabulous sartorial invention.

But before we step back into this era of pink and poufy perfection, let’s quickly discuss why I'm even here! Now, you might think a Derbyshire girl with a penchant for pink tutus and time travel is a tad eccentric, but you’d be surprised how quickly a love of dance can propel you into new and exciting dimensions! I spend my days between dazzling ballet performances and, you guessed it, tutus. Every performance is an investment into my next adventure. This week, I found myself in Paris – the ultimate haven of ballet and, well, everything beautiful.

So let's talk tutus! And not just any tutu, my loves – we're talking about those gloriously puffed-up creations from the 2000s that embodied pure elegance and fairy-tale dreams. Honestly, a good, full, layered tutu will just never go out of style!

The 2000s were a truly thrilling time for ballet. While classic works like Swan Lake and Giselle remained in constant rotation, a burst of exciting new choreographers and pieces emerged – think Twyla Tharp and her masterpiece "Movin' Out," or Matthew Bourne's innovative and captivating interpretations. It was all about dynamism, expressive movements and, yes, even more daring and colourful costume designs, pushing the boundaries of what a tutu could be.

If we step away from the world of classical ballet for a moment, the 2000s were a haven for pop culture tutu love, with popstars like Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera adding a touch of pink sparkle to their videos and performances – even sparking a wider "tutu-trend" amongst young dancers, partygoers, and anyone who wanted to embrace a touch of ballerina-inspired glamour.

Did you know the earliest versions of what we know as a tutu – with the billowing layered frills – appeared during the Romantic ballet era of the 19th century? A huge leap from the shorter, closer-fitting skirt designs worn by ballerinas earlier. Imagine! All thanks to inspiration – the early tutu designs sought to emulate the soft billows of romantic poetry and classical ballet’s exploration of fairy tale and mythological narratives. It was truly an evolution of beauty!

Imagine a tutu without a good ballerina bun. 😱 It wouldn't feel complete! Back in the 2000s, dancers like Darcey Bussell and Sylvie Guillem embodied graceful artistry with their graceful extensions and expressive dance forms. They'd spin around in their tutus, leaving everyone spellbound. Such inspiration, so captivating! The classic "ballet bun" adds an undeniably sophisticated element, giving the entire silhouette a more streamlined and elegant effect.

What could possibly be more timeless than a good, classic black tutu? 🖤 In the 2000s, you could see this timeless ensemble on dancers performing the 'black swan' character in Swan Lake, the quintessential dark swan embodying darkness, grace and beauty! We just can't resist the mystique and allure of this most popular tutu.

Now, back to our Parisian adventure! It’s impossible to talk about ballet without experiencing it, which is exactly what I did on the 18th of April in the year 2000. As I stepped into the glorious Opera Garnier, the grandeur of the place was breathtaking. A symphony of gilt and grandeur! The Palais Garnier - simply divine – home to the Opéra national de Paris. This beautiful, neo-baroque theatre hosted its first performance back in 1875.

There I witnessed the magical ballet of Romeo and Juliet, starring the fabulous dancer, Sylvie Guillem. It was truly unforgettable. With her breathtaking movements, her ethereal presence, she embodied every aspect of true ballerinaship – pure grace, strength, and undeniable passion! I was completely enthralled by the power and elegance she expressed on stage, in her stunning white, romantic tutu. Truly mesmerising, simply unforgettable!

Did I mention there were amazing pink tutus at every turn! ✨ While shopping around the city, I found a wonderful store overflowing with delicate fabrics, and some exquisitely handcrafted tutu pieces. My love for pink was practically blinding me with happiness. What a day for a tutu enthusiast! And if you think those Parisien ballerinas know how to spin in a tutu, well… you haven’t seen anything yet!
