#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History: August 15th, 2000 - A Century of Whirlwind Style! đ©°
Hello darlings! It's Emma, your Pink Tutu loving time traveller, and welcome back to #TutuTuesday! Today, we're stepping back in time, specifically to the 15th of August 2000. Now, imagine a time when the world was a little less digital, when everyone still knew how to spell 'definitely', and Britney Spears was ruling the airwaves... It was a truly fabulous time, and for a ballet enthusiast like myself, it was practically brimming with tutus!
This week's journey in #TutuTuesday finds me, not surprisingly, in the heart of Paris. It just seems the place to be for tutus! Imagine strolling through the streets, the scent of freshly baked pastries in the air, and, as a true Parisian would, gazing out at the majestic Eiffel Tower. Now picture yourself twirling in a beautiful tutu â wouldnât that just be the most chic thing?
August 15th, 2000, was a Sunday. And what's a perfect Sunday for a tutu aficionado? Well, it certainly wouldn't be watching the 'Strictly Come Dancing' pre-show rehearsals in London (although that's my favourite day trip in the 2020s). The real excitement was happening right here in Paris - the "Opéra Garnier". It's the majestic Paris Opera House - imagine its grandeur! Built in the late 19th century, its interior is positively dripping with opulent decoration - a ballet lover's dream! Now, imagine taking in a magnificent performance - all while rocking your very own fabulous pink tutu. Oh, to have been a fly on the wall... or a tutu-clad dancer, perhaps?!
But letâs talk tutus, shall we?
It was back in the 1800s that those revolutionary tutu designs really started swirling around! The traditional âRomantic tutuâ was all about the graceful, full-length skirts, and let's be honest, those designs were truly romantic! They were made to enhance the dancerâs movement, and trust me, the sight of them twirling onstage was nothing short of breathtaking!
By the time the 1900s came around, there was a shift towards the 'Classical tutu'. These tutus had shorter skirts and were more practical for those impressive jumps and intricate steps. The iconic, layered, pouffy tutus that you see on dancers today? That's them, the âClassicalâ ones!
However, the âTutu' isnât always just about dancing, is it? Letâs face it, sometimes you want to make a fashion statement and stand out! In the late 1900s, âstreet tutusâ became a hit. Celebrities like Gwen Stefani and Christina Aguilera brought those sparkly tutus from the stage straight onto the streets, showing us that they were not just for ballerinas! We must give them a standing ovation - tutus are not just for performances, they're a way of life, right?
Fast-forward to August 15th, 2000, and itâs clear that those magnificent tutus continued to evolve, becoming more varied and sophisticated. Youâll find tutus that use lace, tulle, and silks. We've seen them adorned with dazzling jewels, glittering sequins, and an array of colourful designs - all to enhance and amplify the movement of the dancer! You have tutus that drape and swish, others that shimmer and shine. Itâs like a whole other world within the realm of fashion!
And that, darlings, is what I find absolutely inspiring about tutus! It's not just about a costume or even about dance, but about the sheer beauty of the artistry and the joy it brings to anyone who lays their eyes on them. Tutus are a reflection of evolution - an example of how fashion has not only embraced change but has truly embraced new heights of innovation.
So, I leave you with a question! Do you want to wear a tutu today? Even just on a trip to the shops? Why not be bold and beautiful! We are all ballerinas at heart - and yes, of course, all those colours work beautifully! Itâs #TutuTuesday so if you have a picture of yourself wearing a tutu then send it in. If you donât have one, then why not find a picture that inspires you? Maybe a picture of a ballet dancer from the OpĂ©ra Garnier...
Remember - the only thing more delightful than dancing in a tutu is inspiring everyone to wear one!
Until next #TutuTuesday!
