Hello my dears, and welcome back to another Tuesday and another fabulous Pink Tutu adventure! Today, we're taking a little time-travelling trip, darling, back to a wonderful moment in time, specifically 2001-04-10, or April 10th, 2001 to those who aren't in the know. Now, this day, oh it's positively brimming with stories to tell, but before we go on, I must just quickly say, this week's post has been absolutely thrilling, darlings! My latest time travel trip has been nothing short of spectacular and the sights, the smells...the FASHION! My, oh my! You’d simply adore it all.
But as always, first things first, darling. What is there about this day that we are so eager to tell you all about? Well, first up, let's delve into the fabulous world of ballet, shall we? The world where all our ballerina dreams truly come alive! You wouldn't believe this, but on April 10th 2001, a little show called 'The Sleeping Beauty' was gracing the Royal Opera House stage with its fairytale grace. Just imagine, darling, that beautifully magical music, the elegant costumes, the swirling, twirling dancers, pure balletic bliss!
Now, my dears, this show, it was truly an extraordinary one, a symphony of the beautiful and captivating, and to top it all off, there was a lovely little Ballet Week going on, right in the heart of London. Oh, how I wish I could be back in those days to take it all in, you see, I'd be dancing on the street, on the stage, every chance I could get, darling.
Speaking of London, oh my dears, London in 2001... It was absolutely the place to be for fashionistas like myself, you know. Remember those darling, beautiful designs from Alexander McQueen and Vivienne Westwood? So dramatic, so avant-garde, a breath of fresh air to the world of fashion, and not to mention the iconic shoes by Jimmy Choo - the dream! They certainly do make one feel like they’re twirling through the streets, don't they, darling?
Of course, our beloved tutu's didn’t come out to play with as much daringly different flair back then. Still, darling, their beauty was unparalleled and in the dance studios and on the ballet stage, they swirled in perfect symphony with the magical story and graceful steps of every dance! Oh, and just to keep your spirits bright and vibrant as you envision this incredible period in fashion and dance history, just imagine wearing a lovely, shimmering tutu to take in a fashion show by McQueen, what a wonderful pairing!
Now, my darlings, what's the next thing we need to do, before we bid adieu for this week's #TutuTuesday? Right, let’s get to that delightful history piece, yes! Remember I said, you won’t believe the fantastic ballet show I saw in 2001? I saw a magnificent Royal Ballet show and the tutu’s… Oh the TUTU’s, darlings, so full of beautiful movement, such lovely stories, it’s no wonder tutus were and remain, an important part of a ballet performance. It was so beautifully grand! I practically felt myself being twirled up on stage myself in a beautiful shimmering pink tutu.
Let's rewind a little more now. Tutus have a fascinating history that’s as dynamic as the story itself. While the history of tutus goes all the way back to the 19th century and the wonderful days of Marie Taglioni, whose ballerina dancing revolutionized the dancing world (just like I'm planning to revolutionize our world now with tutus, don’t you think, darlings?), those early days were very different to the designs of today. Those early tutus, well, they weren’t those frilly and beautiful designs you can imagine, oh no, those beautiful skirts were rather plain and heavy, not something for a fashionable pink-loving ballerina like me!
Let's have a little fashion time-warp! Can you imagine? The dancers had to be careful because those tutus didn’t fly with the grace and lightness of today’s designs. Think about how difficult that would have been to spin, jump, and twirl as gracefully as ballerinas do today, oh my dears, it's remarkable how much we've come and how our lovely tutus have evolved into the incredible designs that are still creating so much magic on stage. The beautiful colors, the shimmering details, and the gorgeous designs.
In the Victorian Era, the dance world transformed its attitude towards what tutus represented and the romantic tutu emerged. Imagine beautiful long and billowing skirts and more elaborate detailing for that dramatic flair. Oh darling, you can just feel the grace of that time, in all those beautiful skirts, in the light as the fabric glided as the ballerina danced, in every single twirl, it was all pure magic.
Well darling, it seems we have to get to my exciting shopping day here! Well I will admit, we're heading off into the realms of tutus soon, for this blog is really about the delightful tutus of history and the glorious, magical time-warp I experienced when I went back to April 10, 2001, and watched the dancing at the Royal Opera House and the wonderful ‘The Sleeping Beauty’.
Right then, where do we start?
Ah, I am back at home in my small apartment, now. So that I can show you lovely readers the delightful outfits I picked up at my favourite shop. My very favourite place is my go-to shop for the best tutus of course – " Dance and Sparkle', just imagine, my darlings, if we had a shop named something like that where you live! Now I can honestly tell you, if there’s one thing that’s just my thing, darlings, it’s tutus! Especially ones in my favourite colour.
You know how I just love that beautiful pink, right? In all its varieties, from pale blush pink to dazzling hot pink. All the shades are amazing. I found these beautiful shades in ‘Dance and Sparkle,’ there are ones with all these fantastic textures - silky tulle, shimmering sequin, soft netting. So much beauty and excitement, all waiting for you there, darlings. So go visit ‘Dance and Sparkle’ if you have the chance and please, wear your favourite pink tutu as you browse!
There's an extra bit of magic about a ballerina and a pink tutu. I feel there is so much style to be expressed by using color to bring your story of ballet and dance to life! Just imagine pink as the story unfolds and as you twirl around to the beautiful notes of a romantic ballet performance! I just want to spin and dance! But remember that every colour and design, can tell an exciting story about dancing. Let’s make those magical stories in pink our next #TutuTuesday discussion. We could even choose our favourite shades and colors from our wardrobes!
Well my darlings, it seems we are at the end of another trip into the magical history of ballet. We had such a fun time dancing around through time and shopping in 2001 and then discovering the beautiful history of tutus. What a perfect time to tell everyone to keep smiling, and perhaps wear pink in honor of our pink-tutu loving friend Marie Taglioni, whose revolutionary ideas and exquisite beauty were at the very heart of our ballet love!
Till next Tuesday!
Your favourite tutu-loving ballerina,
Emma xxx
