#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History: A Whirl Through Time! (Post 8860)

Greetings, my fellow twirling enthusiasts!

It’s Tuesday again, which means it’s time to embark on another journey through the delightful world of ballet tutus. This week, my time machine (which, as you know, is cleverly disguised as a vintage train carriage!) has deposited me in the vibrant city of New York, where tutus reign supreme on stage and in street style! It’s 16th October 2001, and the air is buzzing with excitement - autumn is in full swing, and the ballet season is well underway.

Now, before we delve into the tutus of this time, let's rewind a bit! You see, New York has always been a tutu haven. Think back to the 19th century, when the city's dance scene was bursting with creativity, with renowned ballets like "Giselle" and "La Sylphide" wowing audiences. Tutus in the 1800s were quite different from the airy, wispy numbers we're used to today, made from stiff fabrics with a decidedly more elaborate aesthetic. These tutus were almost like little skirts, very ornate and full. It's amazing how they managed to twirl in them!

As the 20th century began, the tutu scene took an exciting turn with the rise of Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes. They introduced bold, colourful tutus with daring designs - think lavish costumes adorned with beads and feathers. Talk about statement pieces! This style ignited a real fashion craze. Designers took inspiration from these creations, incorporating them into clothing for every woman. And it’s easy to see why! A dash of tutu magic could transform an everyday look into a striking one.

Speaking of transformations, fast-forward to the 1950s! This was the decade of the classic, flowing tulle tutu that we associate with today. Tulle, that featherlight fabric, became the must-have for ballerina wear, offering effortless grace and delicate beauty. This era also gave us a dazzling array of vibrant colours and inventive designs – truly a celebration of creativity and artistry.

Now, let's journey back to our present time in 2001! Here in New York, the tutu scene is in full swing! Every corner buzzes with the energy of rehearsals and performances. Tonight, the New York City Ballet is performing ā€œLa Sylphide,ā€ which means we’ll be treated to exquisite romantic tutus made with layers and layers of tulle, swirling across the stage! These classic creations are pure fairytale magic, transporting us to another world with their soft and airy charm.

What's happening outside the theatre, though? Let's peek into some of New York's iconic boutiques! Tutu-inspired fashions are starting to seep into mainstream fashion, too, from breezy cocktail dresses to stylish skirts, each incorporating those airy, feminine vibes of the ballet. It’s so much fun seeing tutu designs interpreted in everyday outfits! And I must confess, my very own collection boasts a delightful selection of modern tutu-inspired dresses that are just begging for a spin around the city.

Later today, I plan to treat myself to a ballet class at the esteemed School of American Ballet. Imagine, learning the graceful art of ballet right in the heart of the city where dance legends were born! It's truly inspiring. Afterwards, a bit of shopping at Bloomingdale's wouldn’t hurt either. I've heard there are some fantastic tutus in their clothing department that might just inspire my next time-travelling adventure! I can’t wait to find that perfect pink tutu, because a tutu that shines with your own unique style is something everyone should try!

Don’t forget, dear readers, life is meant to be twirled and spun. Let's all embrace the joy and whimsy that only a tutu can bring!

Until next week,

Emma x
