#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History: Post #8873

Hello lovelies! It's your favourite tutu-wearing time traveller, Emma, back with another #TutuTuesday blast from the past! This week we're twirling back to the 15th of January 2002, and let me tell you, things were absolutely fabulous. You see, darling, that date was right in the midst of all things glitzy and glamour.

Remember those gorgeous glittery pink tutus that were the must-have item in all the big fashion houses? Yeah, they were still the talk of the town, just as they were on our trip back to 19th-century Paris a few weeks back! It was all about the frills, the feathers, and the sheer brilliance of the colour pink. Don't get me wrong, ballet was still the star of the show – a glorious, graceful dance form loved by all, of course! But it's hard not to acknowledge how the pink tutu became more than just a costume, wasn't it? It was an entire fashion statement, and I just loved how everyone was embracing that!

Now, back to the day itself: the 15th of January 2002. London, the beating heart of dance and fashion, was abuzz with excitement! There was this fabulous exhibition at the V&A (you know, the Victoria and Albert Museum, it’s just dreamy for clothes and things!) called ‘The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk’. Imagine, a whole exhibition celebrating a designer who actually incorporated tutus into his haute couture designs! I was simply overjoyed.

Oh, but there was more! In the Royal Opera House, it was a special night as the Royal Ballet showcased ‘Cinderella’ to a packed audience. The costumes! The dancing! The music! It was sheer perfection!

However, this wasn’t just about big events in the capital. Remember those grand train journeys across the country? That very same day, I was gliding through Derbyshire – you know, my very own hometown, where it all began – with the beautiful rolling hills, those majestic old country houses, and the sweet smell of the moors. My home county was having a ‘Dancing on the Edge’ performance in Buxton Opera House, which was, shall we say, absolutely divine!

Here's the thing: the beauty of ballet transcends time. It was just as thrilling and enchanting in 2002 as it is now! You just couldn’t escape the elegance and joy of ballet performances everywhere!

Speaking of ballet performances, do you know how I finance all my incredible time-traveling adventures? It’s a secret I’m about to share, and it’s something that will put a massive smile on your face – trust me! I fund these little journeys of mine with a good ol’ fashioned ballet performance! Imagine this: me, perched in a swishy pink tutu, on a glamorous stage, swirling around in an enchanting performance that makes everyone’s heart flutter.

I do say, if you ever find yourself with the opportunity to catch a ballet show, do jump at the chance. Every single show is magical! You might even find yourself whisked back to the 15th of January 2002 with me, taking in the glorious performances in those beautifully crafted tutus! And when I get to go to a performance I make sure to hit the shops afterward.

Of course, no talk about that time period can be complete without discussing fashion, darling! And oh my, it was a whole lot of fun, let me tell you. The 2000s brought with it a wave of creativity and playful style – from colourful outfits, to a vibrant street fashion scene that made its way to catwalks across the world, it was truly an exhilarating era! I love to browse the internet looking for pictures of 2002 looks. What do we think about Paris Hilton’s Pink, pink, and more pink everything? It’s definitely very tutu inspired.

If there's anything we learned this #TutuTuesday, it's this: pink tutus are timeless and are here to stay! No matter when you are reading this blog, darling, know that the tutu's enduring appeal isn’t about its material. It’s about its expression of freedom, beauty and dreams.
