Tutu Tuesday: A Whirl Through Time - 8921 🩰
Hello fellow Tutu Lovers! It's Emma here, back for another whirl through the history of our beloved tutus! This week we're stepping back in time to 17th December, 2002. Can you believe it's been almost 20 years? Goodness me, time flies when you're pirouetting!
Today's adventure finds me in the heart of London, the hub of all things fashionable and, of course, ballet! I'm taking a break from a rather gruelling but ultimately fulfilling week of performances at the Royal Opera House (more on that later!), and as a proper ballerina with a true love for tutus, a bit of historical research is absolutely essential, wouldn't you agree?
Speaking of history, you won't believe what I stumbled upon earlier! While perusing some antique shops near Covent Garden (where else!), I found the most delightful little treasure: an original copy of The Ballet Annual 2003! This gorgeous book, published on the very day I've chosen for our time travel jaunt, features interviews with all the major ballet stars of the day and is just overflowing with beautiful photographs of spectacular performances and the most wonderful, elaborate costumes, many of them featuring my absolute favourite... tutus!
Just flipping through those pages makes me feel all nostalgic! The book itself feels like a time capsule, full of amazing images of the world of dance, from the classic romanticism of "Giselle" to the daring contemporary choreography of "The Rite of Spring," featuring iconic tutus of all shapes and sizes. It's such a joy to revisit this period.
Tutus: Then and NowOf course, a major reason for today's Tutu Tuesday trip is to compare the fashion trends of the past with those of our present day! We can all agree, tutus never really go out of style, right? However, their interpretations have evolved beautifully through the years.
While tutus from this period tend towards a more classical design – you know, those romantic, flowing tutus, often made with delicate layers of tulle – we've seen a more dramatic and experimental approach in recent years.
Remember Tutus of the 1950s – the beautiful "Romantic" tutus with layers and layers of tulle and a generous use of fabric? The designs of the late 1950s saw a more “linear" form, emphasizing elegance and control over exaggerated volume, and, thankfully, an increase in flexibility for the dancers! And can we ever forget the exquisite and iconic tutus of the 1960s, influenced by the bold and theatrical work of Rudolf Nureyev and the amazing "neoclassical" era with works by choreographers like Jerome Robbins, and the return of a more elegant approach with dancers wearing a variety of forms in the traditional tutu -- but often emphasizing a simple beauty of a “bell" or even an “A” line to showcase the female line and its relationship to space in classical form?
The tutus of 2002 (remember the “early 2000s?!”) were all about elegance and artistry, incorporating refined styles to accentuate a dancer's graceful movements. And I'm all for it! While we love those voluminous classic romantic tutus, the designs that have evolved through time have embraced a wider range of artistic visions – showcasing not just a dancer's skills but also their character, mood and individuality! It's beautiful, truly!
What to Wear to a Ballet ShowNow, I know we love to talk tutus all day long, but even the most devoted of us need to consider the real world, and what to wear when we head out for a ballet show! For 17th December, 2002, consider a beautifully crafted dress, or even a well-tailored pair of trousers! After all, it’s the era when designers like Donna Karan, Ralph Lauren and Calvin Klein were absolutely at their height and inspiring fashion with a classic sensibility. A simple, beautiful garment like a classic dress with some elegant accessories – think statement jewellery – is always chic. For those nights where you’re looking to add a little something more fun and exciting, a smart suit would fit right in! And don't forget a lovely handbag for your essentials.
For me, my outfit would most definitely include a touch of pink! Because even back then, pink was the ultimate colour! Remember my mantra, my lovelies: a little bit of pink goes a long way! A pink shawl or a gorgeous scarf would be the perfect addition! It doesn’t matter where in the world I travel, it seems, my heart remains set on pink!
Speaking of travelling, for this trip I travelled by train - London's train system always fills me with a sense of energy and excitement - it's such an integral part of this amazing city.
But wait! There's more! Just imagine me on this day – at Covent Garden Market! Can you picture it?! It’s a must-see for any visitor, and I certainly wouldn't want to miss the vibrant buzz of the market. It's not only about the market's charm but it's the sheer artistry that surrounds you in this unique area. After browsing stalls for artisanal products and charming antique curios (including those fascinating Ballet Annuals!) I could then make my way to one of my favourite shops - a little dress boutique nestled near the market called "La Belle Couture." It’s a whimsical haven for those of us who can't resist classic styles and timeless fashion pieces. But more importantly, “La Belle Couture” is truly committed to providing the very best clothing options for stylish ballets, concerts, and dance-themed social occasions – I highly recommend checking it out if you're in London.
More Tutu Tuesday AdventuresI know I have shared just a snapshot of my experiences for today, but it’s been absolutely unforgettable. We have travelled together to this special day and enjoyed all the delights it has to offer. Remember, as always, this blog post has been another beautiful stop in my Time Travelling Tutu adventures! Remember, if you have your own favourite "Tutu Tuesday" moments from the past, I’d love to hear about them! Let’s keep this celebration of tutus alive and well!
In the meantime, keep those tutu dreams going, and keep swirling! And of course, remember to subscribe to www.pink-tutu.com for more fantastic historical journeys and everything else tutu-tastic.
Until next week, and happy tutuing, Emma xx
