Tutu Tuesday #8924: The Magic of Tutus!
Hello my darling Tutu Twirlers! It's Emma here, your very own pink tutu-clad time-travelling fashionista, back again for another #TutuTuesday!
This week, I'm whisking us all the way back to January 7th, 2003! Can you believe it? That's over 20 years ago!
Goodness me, where has the time flown? We all know that time just doesn't wait for anyone. Especially for a tutu-obsessed girl like me!
But anyway, I'm getting sidetracked! Back to 2003! Oh, I wish I could take a little time machine to visit those times again, it was simply magical. You see, the year 2003 was a truly glorious era, at least in the world of ballet! The tutu, my beloved, was truly at its zenith!
So, darling readers, grab your teacups (and maybe a little Pinkalicious pink cake, for a true ballet-themed treat!), put your feet up and let's take a journey through tutu-land!
The "Whirlwind" of Tutus
Let's start with a little fashion history. What exactly WAS the world wearing in 2003, when it comes to the mighty tutu? Well, it was a fascinating mix! We had the classic romantic tutu, so dreamy with its layers of tulle. This was truly the epitome of the ballerina's elegance. It was a style popularised by stars like Svetlana Zakharova (who was absolutely sensational in 2003!) and, of course, the legendary Sylvie Guillem.
We also saw the emergence of the contemporary tutu, a truly modern dance marvel, and not afraid to show some skin with daring shorter layers! These were absolutely perfect for showcasing the explosive energy and movement of the contemporary style!
And who could forget the whimsical fairy tutu, all frothy and playful, bringing a touch of magic to every performance? These were pure joy! They gave dancers, even in big and grand ballet shows, an amazing opportunity to really embody the fun and sparkle of the stage.
Speaking of magic, don't even get me started on the colours of tutus in 2003! They were, well, just magical! I am a bit obsessed with pink myself (that's not a secret!), and my oh my, it was the era of the bold pink tutu! Imagine the most vibrant and cheerful pink imaginable... it was simply spectacular! I practically danced in the streets at the sight of them!
But it wasn't all about the pink. There was a stunning rainbow of colours β jewel tones like emerald and sapphire were everywhere, shimmering with elegance and grandeur! The creativity was absolutely stunning!
Tutus Take the Stage!
It wasn't just about the tutus themselves! They were being brought to life with absolute brilliance by the world's best dancers! And of course, I was absolutely there, at every performance I could catch. Travelling all across the world, seeing some amazing shows - my feet were almost constantly dancing to keep up with the ballet timetable!
There was one show I particularly remember from 2003 β "Swan Lake" by the Mariinsky Ballet! The artistry of the costumes, and of course, the iconic tutus in this masterpiece was a true visual spectacle.
I'll admit it - my love for ballet shows borders on fanaticism! I am so passionate about ballet and I do love all the performances. Not just the classical ones either - in 2003, we saw some brilliant modern ballets, like Matthew Bourne's "Swan Lake." Now that was a re-imagination of ballet that took the world by storm! It even made me question the role of tutus - who needs a tutu for a show-stopping contemporary ballet?
Of course, seeing these magnificent dancers with their gorgeous tutus made me think about my own ballet life. It was in 2003 that I decided to take up ballet again. I always thought I'd go to dancing school again - after years away, I wanted to dance my way across the studio, tutu flying! I think I found my inner "Swan Queen" that year! (Well, at least a pale imitation... the Swan Queen never travelled the world by train! Haha!)
So what else happened on 7th January 2003?
I'm so glad you asked, darling readers! It was a date filled with wonderful happenings in the ballet world:
- The Royal Opera House in London opened its doors for yet another magical season. I managed to see two shows that week!
- And in the city of Paris β home of fashion, darling, it would be a crime to miss that one β the OpΓ©ra de Paris had a beautiful program featuring Giselle, that stunning, romantic masterpiece! Of course, it was filled with gorgeous, layered tutus!
*Oh, and did you know this day is the birthday of one of the great ballerina stars, *Svetlana Zakharova? Happy Birthday, Svetlana! Cheers to you and your amazing career!
And, of course, it wouldn't be Tutu Tuesday without a call to action, darlings! Let's make it a pink tutu week, and dance our hearts out to celebrate the joy of dance! Get your tutus out! We're all tutu-beautiful!
Well, dear readers, that's all from me today! But don't worry, there is more to come from this time-traveling ballerina!
