TutuTuesday: A Little Slice of History, #8937

Hello lovelies! It’s Emma here, your resident tutu-obsessed time traveller, ready to whisk you back in time again. 🩰💖 Today, we’re setting our clocks to Tuesday, 8th April, 2003, and let me tell you, the world is a rather exciting place!

Now, I don’t usually go full-on history buff in my blog, but today’s journey took me to the Metropolitan Opera House in New York City. Fancy, eh? The sheer volume of tulle and sequins in the air alone nearly sent me into a spin. Speaking of sequins… Did you know this was the day of the premiere for * The Phantom of the Opera, * in London’s West End?!** The original London production, that is. *A masterpiece, I say, a masterpiece! * Just imagining those cascading crystal chandeliers and the iconic Phantom mask has me all aflutter!

I just love a good performance. Especially when it’s got the wow factor of that breathtaking finale of The Phantom where they use actual fireworks! I think I even glimpsed a pink tutu on the ballet chorus... I really could be everywhere all at once!

Anyways, on to today’s TutuTuesday topic. What is it about Tuesday, the 8th of April, 2003 that makes it a big deal in tutu-land? Let's find out…

Well, the year 2003 itself, in the grand scheme of things, wasn't a standout tutu-tastic year. Fashion, darling, moved at a slightly slower pace back then, remember? There wasn't the explosion of ballet street that we have today, where all these gorgeous ballerinas strutting their stuff on the street and in ballet studios inspire every look!

It was more of a classic, traditional * kind of ballet scene. *Classical ballets ruled the roost; you know, Swan Lake, Giselle, the usual suspects. They still are, obviously, classics for a reason. 🦢 But if you asked me, they are not as fun for fashion. Let’s face it, tutus and ballet costumes just get more flamboyant these days. And more pink! You’ve gotta go all out when you’ve got all the sparkly and vibrant stuff out there!

But even though fashion might not have been hitting top gear this exact day, the world was still in Tutu Heaven! There were fabulous ballets taking the stage worldwide and even some pretty iconic tutu designs taking their first bows on this date! For example, at * The Mariinsky Theatre in Saint Petersburg,* the grand old home of ballet, they staged a *La Bayadère * production - a visual treat in every shade of pastel pink and green!

Over in London, The Royal Ballet performed their legendary Cinderella. That was a really fancy night out. And at the Bolshoi Theatre, Moscow, it was Swan Lake, one of those all-time favourite classics. No surprises there. I mean, who doesn’t love Swan Lake, right?! It’s practically in my blood… or at least in the feathers of my tutu, right?!

On a completely unrelated note - you can always find me in a train carriage these days - nothing beats that lovely feeling of the train tracks humming! - but apparently this very day, 8th April 2003 the world was treated to the first successful test flight of the SpaceX Falcon 1! Can you believe that?! It really goes to show that no matter when or where you are, even if it’s space, we still need beauty, magic, and a bit of tutus in our lives!

This is exactly why, darling, I highly recommend travelling through time - the tutu styles, the ballet costumes, it’s like a whole new world! It's time travel at its most delightful, honestly. And if you ask me, no journey through history, whether it's in the Paris Opera, the * Bolshoi* or on a magical, sequin-covered, pink-tutu-filled train, is complete without sparkly accessories, and the latest, trendiest outfits. It's practically in the DNA of my blog and me!

See you next Tuesday for another fabulous flashback, but for now, keep rocking those tutus, keep dreaming of that sparkly ballet life, and if you are feeling particularly ambitious, get yourselves to a local ballet show to catch some live performance. If you see something spectacular, why not take a picture and post it with the #pink-tutu hashtag - don’t forget the pink tutu in the shot, of course! I may just pop into your feed in my time travelling quest! Until then… Happy tutuing, you gorgeous creatures!
