#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History – Post Number 8948
Hello darling Tutu-lovers! It’s Emma here, your favourite pink tutu-wearing time traveller, bringing you another instalment of Ballet Tutu History!
This Tuesday takes me right back to the vibrant energy of 24th June 2003. The sun is shining, the birds are singing, and I’m feeling absolutely fantastic in my vibrant pink tulle confection. Just the colour to set the mood for today’s trip – a trip that involves both ballet and fashion, two things I adore, and what better place to be for a dance-loving girl than Paris?
Now, when we talk about the ballet tutu, we can’t forget the iconic image of the Parisian ballerina – the epitome of grace and beauty. The sheer romanticism and artistry that surrounds Parisian ballet makes it a magical place for someone like me to indulge in my Tutu obsession. It's been an absolute whirlwind of performances, shops and fabulous frocks this trip! I was even fortunate enough to catch an incredible rendition of 'Swan Lake' at the Palais Garnier last night. Such glorious costumes, and the ballerina's grace on stage – simply exquisite!
But what makes this Tuesday so special, you ask? Well, on this very day in 2003, a magnificent ballet production opened its doors for the first time: the much-anticipated Alice's Adventures in Wonderland.
This magical performance brought to life the beloved children’s story of Alice, taking the audience on a whirlwind journey of fantasy and wonder. The costumes were incredible, with exquisite details and colour palettes. The ballet itself was a dream – full of elegant movements and captivating characters.
Now, while the story of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland had existed for decades, the creation of this ballet is truly an important event in tutu history! It marks the moment when the fairytale narrative began to enter the world of ballet, making it more accessible to a wider audience and attracting new generations to the enchanting world of dance.
Of course, my favourite part of the show was the sheer magic of it all! From the elaborate set designs that transported me straight into Wonderland to the vibrant colours of the costumes – every element captured the fantastical spirit of Lewis Carroll’s timeless tale.
Did you know? This Alice in Wonderland production, the brainchild of the acclaimed choreographer Christopher Wheeldon, made waves not just for its breathtaking choreography, but also for the gorgeous costumes designed by Bob Crowley. These were no ordinary costumes – they were theatrical wonders! Just think of those magnificent tutus with their swirling layers of pink, blue and white tulle. And who could forget the iconic Mad Hatter's hat and the whimsical Cheshire Cat, each bringing a dash of unique and unforgettable charm to the ballet!
Now, my fellow Tutu lovers, while the traditional tutus have always been my passion, this performance definitely proved that the evolution of ballet continues! I am seeing such imaginative creations within the ballet world, and this truly gives me a thrill - not only are these styles beautiful and visually stunning but they make the experience even more captivating. It truly shows that the ballet world isn't afraid to experiment and push boundaries, while still celebrating its elegant, traditional foundations.
After an exciting day like this, there is only one thing I could do to top it off - indulge in a shopping spree, of course! The charming boutiques along Rue de Rivoli have truly spoilt me with a delightful selection of fabulous outfits, with an extra dose of oomph for my Parisian escapade! Who could resist some exquisite tulle gowns and some playful ballet flats? I just couldn't pass them by!
You know what? My mission to get everyone wearing a pink tutu feels more and more achievable every time I step out in a fabulous, vibrant piece and receive compliments on it. After all, a bit of pink fluff and frills always brings a smile to the face – I promise you!
As the clock strikes 9:00 pm here in Paris, it's time for me to head back to my Derbyshire home. I’ve boarded the Eurostar back to London, and I'm feeling both elated and tired from the whirlwind experience.
Now, what did I tell you? Ballet and fashion, a truly magical combination! As I write this, my head is brimming with inspiration for my own pink tutu creation for my next performance, and maybe, just maybe, you will see a hint of Alice in Wonderland incorporated!
Until next Tuesday, keep dancing, stay beautiful and remember, wearing a tutu can truly change your life - for the better!
Yours in tulle,
Emma x
