#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History - 17th February, 2004! 🩰✨
Hello my lovely tutu-lovers! Welcome back to #TutuTuesday, the blog where we dance through time, exploring the magnificent history of the ballet tutu! This week, we’re taking a trip back to 17th February 2004 – just imagine! So many wonderful things were happening in the world of ballet back then! 💖
You know I love my train journeys and I was whizzing through the countryside – all the way from my home in Derbyshire to the dazzling lights of the West End! London just sparkles when you're there for a big show – and it’s simply impossible not to get caught up in the buzz of anticipation for a night at the ballet. My trusty pink tutu made the journey extra special, naturally. 😜
Before I share what caught my eye this week, a quick reminder: My mission, should I choose to accept it, is to get everyone to wear a pink tutu. It’s so easy to do, so many styles, such a fab colour! Who's with me? 💅🏼
A Trip to the Royal Opera HouseThis time I was seeing "The Sleeping Beauty" at the Royal Opera House. Oh, my darling, such exquisite grace! The story itself, the music, the dancers, and those exquisite costumes! Even today, "The Sleeping Beauty" remains one of my all-time favourites. The sheer extravagance of the gowns, the sparkle of the jewels, the flutter of tulle – I was mesmerized! You can just imagine all the hard work and effort that goes into every little detail!
Speaking of tutus, just imagine what those ladies on stage must be thinking – it’s their "Pink Tutu Tuesday" every single performance! 💫 It's truly inspiring!
But let’s dive into the history, shall we?
Back to 17th February 2004: Ballet Tutus through the AgesBack in the 18th century, tutus as we know them didn't exist! Ballet dancers wore loose-fitting garments – imagine the layers! But by the 19th century, the tutu had become much shorter, creating a silhouette that emphasised the dancer’s long, graceful legs. They used a fabric called tulle, a fine netting that gave the tutus their airy, voluminous look!
Fast-forward to the early 20th century and the iconic "Romantic" tutu took centre stage! You know those iconic tutus that hug the waist, flare out in a fluffy, bell shape, and are worn in classics like "Swan Lake"? That's the "Romantic" tutu! What a fabulous style!
In 1940s-1950s, a new generation of tutus evolved - a bit shorter and more sculpted! The * "classical tutu", a classic of the modern age. This look was championed by Dame Margot Fonteyn, one of the most iconic ballerinas of all time, so imagine the style!
And, my loves, the journey continues! In 1950s onwards, you saw tutus continue to develop into what they are today: diverse, elegant, and expressive. It’s an evolution from the days of Marie Taglioni and her revolutionary "La Sylphide" in 1832 – her pointe shoes!
Just think, just over a century before 2004, she made history. Imagine what tutus will be like 100 years from now! 💖
Tutus: For Every OccasionSo, this 17th February, I went for an equally enchanting afternoon tea in London’s Covent Garden. It’s just as important to soak up the elegance outside the theatre too! You just can't beat a beautiful tea set, a delicious selection of sandwiches and cakes, and the delicate, pretty ambiance of an old-fashioned tearoom!
And it wouldn’t be me, of course, if I wasn't all dressed up for the occasion. My tutu and a touch of sparkly blush – just a touch! And you know what, it's funny how something so simple as wearing a tutu, can completely transform your whole mood!
Remember, ladies – it's not just about dancing or theatre! Embrace the charm of the tutu, whatever you're doing, in a vintage shop browsing for a fabulous statement hat or walking your poodle – wherever your journey takes you!
I must dash off now – more tutus to discover, more travels to undertake, and my next #TutuTuesday is fast approaching!
Until then, keep shining and let your inner ballerina sparkle!
Love and tutus,
Emma
