#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History: A Trip Through Time - 16th March 2004

Hello darlings! 🩰

Welcome back to my little corner of the internet, where the only rule is pink tutus for everyone! It’s Tuesday, which means it’s time for another journey into the enchanting history of the ballet tutu!

Today, I’m feeling a little bit whimsical, so I’ve hopped on a train (don't tell anyone, it's my little secret, ahem) and found myself back in the bustling year of 2004, surrounded by the scent of fresh-baked pastries and the sound of music cascading through the air. Honestly, I think I could spend all day here!

Why 2004? You might ask. Well, darlings, I'm drawn to it like a moth to a flame. Think ballerina buns (my favourite!), chunky hair bands, ballet flats that look like they're straight from a Parisian cafe - oh, the beauty! The fashion world was at a very particular point of history. The early noughties, oh dear. (Sniffs). You’ll forgive me for not lingering there too long!

Anyways, where were we? Oh yes, ballet! In 2004, the ballet world was buzzing with a mix of tradition and modern flair. It's truly inspiring to see how the dance itself was developing and how, despite the world spinning around, ballet's elegant beauty remained, as steadfast as a perfectly-turned out leg.

What was particularly thrilling on this day in 2004 was a stunning performance by the Royal Ballet in Covent Garden! A full house for Romeo and Juliet with those amazing costumes by John Macfarlane, so dreamy and full of drama! (Who knew a ballet tutu could look so grand and dramatic!) They were just gorgeous, don’t you think? Those glorious tutus flowed like a dream as the ballerinas moved effortlessly across the stage, oh I would have loved to have been a fly on the wall during those rehearsals!

You know, darling, thinking back, ballet in 2004 felt very "classical", and that was what made it so utterly fabulous! They knew how to take a classic and make it come alive in a totally modern way, but keeping those iconic traditional aspects like, of course, the majestic tutu, ever at the centre of everything. Theatricality. I've said it before and I'll say it again - there is something special about those flowing skirts, with that timeless elegant silhouette.

Remember those super fluffy and lavishly ornate tutus? This is a point in history when they really were at their fluffiest! A beautiful, dreamy cloud of tulle. Almost like an extravagant, cloud-shaped meringue! 🍰 (If only ballet dancers could eat cake instead of dancing. Just a dream...but a delicious dream!).

Of course, my pink tutu stood out amongst all these beauties - even if there were several layers of sparkly tulle - but let’s face it, darlings, nothing beats the vibrant power of a true, shocking pink tutu. Just as bold, glamorous, and fun as my personality! 😉

Speaking of tulle...did you know, back then, they used something called 'Stiff Net?' You might find yourself coming across this old terminology at some antique shops (they still have tutus!), which is actually quite lovely to handle. Stiff, beautiful netting to hold up those grand tutus and their magnificent weight of fabric. Nowadays we can get the most beautiful tulles, even more than before, and I love to combine all of those beautiful colours into a truly unique look for my tutus! Did you know I also love customising tutus?! They make my little heart skip a beat!

Anyway, it’s always lovely to pop back to 2004, even for a quick visit. What I love about looking back at those early 2000s looks - despite my fondness for maximalist sparkle and pink tutus - is seeing those timeless looks which were truly special to their time. I find those particular styles very inspirational. And you, dear reader?

Speaking of 2004 - who else loved those adorable hairbands that the ballerina dancers would wear? Remember those little butterfly clips and the cute tiny little ballerina buns tucked underneath? The cuteness was unreal, really! (and let’s not even mention the glitter – what a golden age). Those sweet looks were totally a fashion icon! I must have had all those glittery hairbands in the shade of bright, brilliant pink!

So, as I leave you on a pink cloud of tulle and a wave of glittering butterfly clips, be sure to follow me on my next journey! It’s an amazing time we live in, especially for those of us who love tutus! What adventures await in the world of dance? I am already on the move! (No, don't ask about that time travel machine...it's just one of my secret ways to do amazing tutu-related things - wink wink!).
Until next Tuesday, my loves, keep twirling!

Yours in tulle,

Emma
