#TutuTuesday: A Whirl Through Time!

Post Number: 8991

Hello darlings! Welcome back to my little corner of the internet, where tutus reign supreme and every day is a dance! I'm Emma, your resident tutu enthusiast, and today's #TutuTuesday journey takes us back to a most exciting year: 2004! I mean, can you even imagine? That year had it all! We had Britney and Justin going all "matching denim" on us (who even knew we needed that?!), Paris Hilton was queen of the pink fluffy poodle look, and yes, my dear friends, the tutus were flying!

Today we're focusing on a date in particular: 20th April 2004. I know, I know, what happened on that day? Well, as always, my dear reader, you must journey with me to find out!

Now, this Tuesday finds me whisked away to a vibrant city on the east coast of the USA. (My ballet performance as Clara in "The Nutcracker" last night, by the way, totally covered my train ticket! Talk about an elegant, albeit rather sweaty, form of transport!). I can almost smell the bright lights, the heady energy, and the exciting whispers of the bustling ballet scene… oh! Don’t mind me, I'm getting a little ahead of myself. Let’s back up a little.

From The Past: The Birth of the Tutu

Before we get swept away by 2004, we need to understand where these fluffy wonders came from. Picture this: a 19th century ballerina, trapped in her restrictive, flowing gowns. Ballet was a powerful art form, yet its graceful movements were almost stifled by the impracticality of the era’s fashion. This is where Marie Taglioni, a glorious, revolutionary, tutu-wearing icon, comes in.

This remarkable woman, considered the ‘queen of the romantic ballet’, decided to change things. In 1832, Marie danced as La Sylphide, the mythical woodland spirit, with a tutu so short and light, she became a beacon for every ballerina that followed. This new fashion allowed the movements to shine – and honestly, I can’t think of a better way to watch a dancer perform. It was the first of its kind, a revolutionary act for dancers to show the beauty of their form through free movement, and in time, the Romantic Era was born. The Romantic ballet, like the tutu itself, became all about ethereal beauty, a symbol of elegance and a symbol of movement… It’s something that still sparks my heart today.

The Tutu In Our Time: A Little Pink Perfection

20th April, 2004! A most memorable day indeed!

I am here to tell you that on this date, The Royal Ballet (I can feel you reaching for your handkerchiefs - we do love those fabulous Brits!) took the stage at the Royal Opera House, performing ‘Cinderella’. You wouldn’t have seen me in the crowd - I was on stage, darling! In the grandest performance of the evening, with the entire audience captivated, I twirled and jumped as a sparkling fairy in my little pink tutu. It's truly magic how these tiny dances can have such an enormous impact on everyone who watches!

But 20th April is about more than just ballet performances! What better way to commemorate the power of tutus than a day of pink-tutu fashion, wouldn't you say? Now, picture this: Think bold pink satin with the softest tulle, accented by a fluffy, pink, feather boa - my latest accessory for a true pink goddess moment. ( I’m not saying that this boa inspired one of the New York's biggest names in fashion, Karl Lagerfeld, to make one his muse on the catwalk just a little while later, ahem but wouldn’t that be a lovely coincidence?).

And speaking of inspiring! Who wouldn't want to be Barbie at some point, huh? She is, after all, the epitome of fabulousness, and who could forget that legendary, pink, very stylishly designed ballet tutu from one of her very first films? Let's be honest: a Barbie-inspired tutu day is all we really need!

A Day To Remember

This particular day holds another fantastic memory for me - a particularly exciting day that included a performance at one of London's largest theatre! To think that such magic unfolds just once in our little bubble of time... The wonder never ceases!

But even if we weren't celebrating a theatrical premiere in this magical place, let's face it: any day is a good day for pink tutus. This magical fashion doesn’t require any specific date to come alive, it always makes the world a bit brighter. Just ask any ballerina; she’ll tell you, every twirl feels a little better with a pretty pink tutu.

Let's keep spreading the joy! If you find yourself drawn to the elegant world of tutus, go for it! Pick out that beautiful pink tutu of your dreams, add your own style to it and step out of the ordinary. You deserve it, darling.

Until next Tuesday, let’s all keep swirling!

Love, Emma
