#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History: A Whirlwind Tour Through Time!
Hello my darlings! Welcome back to my little corner of the internet where tutus reign supreme! This week's #TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History blog post marks my 9002nd installment, and my time machine has whirled me right back to July 6th, 2004. Oh, the memories! It was a summer filled with sunshine and the sweet melodies of the ballet. Let's hop aboard this pink tutu express and take a trip back to this glittering moment in time!
Now, you might be thinking, "Emma, why 2004? Isn't that, like, ages ago? The early 2000s, are they even a thing anymore?" To which I would say, darling, every era is a thing! The beauty of ballet, its grace, its strength, its artistic expression, knows no time. And besides, 2004 was a fabulous year for tutus!
Firstly, it's the year I was born (well, actually, I've always existed as a tutu-wearing ballerina, it's just my time travel adventures got a bit out of hand), but it also marks a time when Ballet Street made a big splash onto the London stage! Remember those daring dancers in their colourful and vibrant tutus? Oh my, those tutus were so chic! And if you were lucky, you might have seen some amazing street theatre in 2004 - ballet right there in the heart of the city, inspiring and surprising everyone in their path! Think vibrant colours, fantastic movement and a tutu or two.
That year, I spent much of my time taking ballet lessons in the cobbled back alleys of Derbyshire, England, dreaming of one day dancing in a magnificent London theatre. What could be better than sharing your love for the arts with the world? This is why my ballet classes are held in various locales. This week I'm having lessons in a converted old barn in Somerset, it is the most idyllic setting and the local sheep were really interested in my pink tutu, perhaps it will inspire them to spin? I'm a firm believer in taking ballet outside of the studio, to parks and gardens and maybe even some historical ruins! I hope that one day I can see everyone twirling in pink tutus! My mission? To spread the joy and beauty of the tutu everywhere!
While those dreams were simmering away, 2004 saw some fabulous shows. My first glimpse of "The Sleeping Beauty" was pure magic! It took my breath away. The sheer grandeur of the sets, the sweeping tutus (my favourite shade of pink, of course), the elegance of every dancer… It was breathtaking. And speaking of grand tutus, you simply had to witness "Swan Lake" in 2004! I was so enchanted by the contrasting styles of the white and black swans, each tutu reflecting the contrasting personalities so beautifully. Oh, the grace of those dancers! And how those tutus swirled!
I must admit, I am an expert tutu spotter. And 2004 was full of exciting developments in the tutu world! There was the rise of "ballerina" fashion in street wear! I couldn't wait to dress up in my ballet inspired fashion - it really allowed me to showcase my personal style. The rise of tulle-skirts with delicate embellishments was my particular favourite. That little puff of femininity? Absolutely magical.
Of course, back in the day, there weren't always the plethora of online boutiques selling dazzling tutus (I love finding hidden gems from independent shops). Instead, I used to spend my afternoons in department stores, weaving through rails and rails of glittering fabrics and dancing with a rainbow of colours! Oh, how I dreamt of creating my own line of pink tutus. A dream that is rapidly coming true now - follow the journey on this blog.
The real beauty of tutus? They're not just for dancers. Imagine twirling your little one in a pastel tutu, or letting them flit through life with a tulle skirt flowing behind them! And hey, even a full grown woman looks utterly glamorous in a tutu - embrace the pink tutu!
Anyway, darlings, this #TutuTuesday post is starting to take flight! We have so much more to cover. And what better way to celebrate 2004 than by… putting on your most fabulous tutu, grabbing your dancing shoes, and stepping out into the world with grace and joy!
Until next Tuesday,
Emma
