#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History: Post #9021 - 16th November 2004
Hello my lovely tutu-lovers! Welcome back to another fabulous #TutuTuesday on www.pink-tutu.com! This week I'm back from a whirlwind trip to Paris. Oh, the sights! Oh, the fashion! Oh, the pastries! I swear, I could have stayed in that city for weeks. It's just the most enchanting place for any tutu aficionado, even if I did find it a tad chilly this time of year. You just can't wear a pink tulle masterpiece in the snow! (Maybe I could try a sparkly snowflake tutu, hmm... )
Anyways, let's rewind back to our regularly scheduled programme. Today's #TutuTuesday is a bit of a special one, you see, as I'm focusing on a truly iconic date in tutu history. We're time-traveling all the way back to 16th November 2004. Yes, it's ten whole years ago. How time flies!
This is the date I started to become really obsessed with tutus!
Let me tell you, it all started with the most glorious Swan Lake I had ever seen. I had booked myself a train ride all the way down to London to watch the Royal Ballet at the magnificent Royal Opera House. The train journey is a total delight in itself. So relaxing, and always a chance to admire the other passengers' sartorial choices. You wouldn't believe how many tutus I spot on the London Underground these days! (It’s a big city, and you've gotta make a statement, am I right?)
But back to Swan Lake. I still remember that beautiful performance in all its breathtaking glory. It truly brought me closer to tutus as a whole, making me want to move my own dainty limbs to emulate these grace-filled ballerinas. Let's be honest, who wouldn't want to spin around on pointe in a perfectly twirled confection of tulle? I practically melted into my seat watching them flit about the stage.
However, this date has another interesting connection to tutu history that doesn’t involve a ballerina’s pointe shoes! Now, prepare to be amazed… the 16th of November 2004 was also the day a groundbreaking ballet documentary premiered on television! It was called "The Company: Behind the Scenes at the Royal Ballet" - the story of the Royal Ballet and their day-to-day training and rehearsals. Did you know that the BBC broadcast it live, capturing all the intricate rehearsals, demanding routines, and the magic that happens when ballet is truly perfected? I've gotta say, the doc was a total must-watch!
Do you remember seeing it? And did you fall in love with ballet as much as I did? You can tell me all about it in the comments below. I always love hearing from fellow tutu enthusiasts!
In the world of tutus, I’d say this was the date I fully went "all in". I’ve been an absolute tutu maniac ever since! In fact, my lovely friend Eleanor, she runs her own fabulous fabric shop right here in Derbyshire. Now, if you ask me, the fabric shop is almost as inspiring as a ballet show! And guess what she helped me whip up in honour of my newfound love of ballet: a dazzlingly pink tutu.
Talk about tutu goals! My creation wasn’t the perfectly poised stage tutu, mind you, but it definitely did the trick. It was the moment when tutu dreams turned into tutu reality.
I just felt SO good in it! All floaty and carefree, like I could spin, skip, and leap through the streets of London itself. Honestly, I don't think there's anything more fun than a day spent whirling around in a pink tulle confection. If you see me at the Royal Opera House these days, it might just be my sparkly new pink masterpiece making a grand entrance. I have to keep spreading the love, you know, because that's what pink tutus are all about: celebrating life, laughter, and all things wonderful!
As for today’s tutus, this date also brings a fascinating piece of historical info to light: a popular Parisian fashion house decided to experiment with a tutu-inspired creation for the day. Can you believe it? They actually included a tutu in one of their clothing lines for that specific date, too!
What does that tell you?
This wasn't just a whim. They recognised a growing interest in the enchanting magic of a tutu – a sartorial revolution was afoot! We are, after all, talking about a symbol of artistry, elegance, and feminine flair that appeals to all ages.
So tell me: Are you rocking a tutu today? If you are, please do snap a picture of your outfit and tag me @EmmaTutu on Insta. It's just an absolute treat to see everyone looking so splendidly styled and ready to make a tutu statement!
Now, I have a delightful plan. Since my time-traveling days have been a little busy of late, I decided to dedicate this blog post to remembering what makes tutus truly special. This week, I challenge you to take inspiration from my time-traveling memories and think about the Swan Lake that had me entranced and the BBC documentary that had everyone talking.
Challenge: Can you think of a day when you fell completely in love with tutus? Tell me your favourite memories and share a photo with a tutu from back then!
I'm off to the grand opening of a new fashion store that's celebrating tutus for a week! Maybe there will be a vintage-style pink tulle masterpiece hiding among the racks… Don’t forget to keep coming back to www.pink-tutu.com for your weekly dose of tutus! Until next week, lovelies!
Lots of tutu-tiful love,
Emma
