Hello my dearest tutu lovers! Welcome back to my weekly delve into the history of the tutu. Today, we're taking a time-traveling train journey all the way back to 5th April 2005. Buckle up, because this one's going to be a whirl of romantic tutus and captivating stories!
As you know, I love to hop around the time-space continuum (especially when it comes to shopping!), but this week I'm venturing back to a rather special year. 2005 saw a definite resurgence of interest in all things tutu, and I was right in the heart of it all. It's been such a delight to revisit this era and soak up the atmosphere. Think sweet and simple tutus paired with floral frocks and big, charming smiles!
Now, if you’ll indulge me, allow me to recount a rather thrilling tale of tutu fashion that unfolded on this very date…
My time-traveling landing took place at a beautiful little ballet school nestled in the heart of London, right next to the Covent Garden theatre. It was an utterly charming place – filled with the gentle thrum of practice music and the intoxicating aroma of freshly polished shoes and, of course, that inimitable scent of tutus (a blend of cotton candy and delicate floral powder)!
As I entered, a ballet class was in full swing. Oh, how those students captivated me with their graceful movements and pure, unadulterated joy. I could see why ballet had been the epitome of elegant grace in 2005. The air was electric with excitement, anticipation for the new productions, the latest tutu designs and – gasp – even a rumour of a new type of fabric being used in a contemporary ballet company! (I just had to pop into that company's costume room - more on that later!)
After watching the ballet students twirl their way into my heart, I headed to Covent Garden to experience the atmosphere surrounding one of London's most famous theatrical venues. Imagine this, darlings, street performers clad in sparkly costumes - dazzling displays of acrobatics and musical delights! It was truly enchanting.
However, I must admit, my true treasure hunting had only just begun!
Now, my adventures are fuelled by shopping expeditions, don't you know? My itinerary had included a visit to a renowned haberdashery, and, I can tell you, this store was a haven of vintage laces and ribbons! I managed to snag the most wonderful tulle for my own dress (oh, it was so pink, so divine!), along with a glorious selection of fabric samples for a special Tutu Tuesday project. Let’s just say my design book for 2005 has gotten quite a makeover!
But, before we jump into my creative musings, let's return to the tutu renaissance of 2005. I must confess, the entire world felt a little more sparkly in those days! The tutus were less traditional, bolder, with a sprinkle of playful femininity that stole everyone's hearts! Imagine a tutu designed with swathes of shimmering lilac fabric, adorned with delicate sequins, paired with a loose, romantic, ruffled blouse. Picture yourself at a vintage fair or strolling along the South Bank in London, with the crisp autumn air sending shivers through you - and then a little skip and twirl brings you back to reality with the comforting warmth of a hot chocolate in hand. It was absolute bliss!
The key word here was "playful". This wasn't about strict classic tutus, although those held a revered place, of course. There was a definite mood for experimenting with shapes and embellishments – you could find a tutu designed in layers, in swirling floral patterns or crafted from silk that rippled and flowed as gracefully as the ballerinas who wore them. And, of course, it wouldn't be 2005 without a nod to pop culture, so the tutus even snuck onto the fashion runway – the more opulent and dramatic the better!
Now, about that contemporary ballet company I mentioned! I discovered an exciting new use of tulle. A choreographer was collaborating with a young fashion designer, creating truly revolutionary tutu costumes for a brand new ballet set in a city street. Oh, it was a revelation! Imagine this, the tulle being woven with reflective silver threads, creating a breathtaking play of light against the dark, bustling backdrop. Simply magnificent!
These daring creations certainly took my breath away! My time traveling research is all about understanding how the humble tutu evolved over time. 2005 really stood out because it embodied that spirit of embracing something a little different, a touch of bold playfulness and a celebration of sheer femininity. It’s why, to this day, I’m constantly looking for ways to modernise the classic tutu.
But that's not all!
2005 also saw the birth of "The Tutu Project" – an inspiring community initiative dedicated to promoting dance in schools. You can imagine my delight at witnessing this project blossom! With its charming slogan "Every girl deserves to twirl," The Tutu Project donated tutus and dance classes to schools, ensuring that children of all backgrounds could experience the joy of movement. Such an uplifting, heart-warming moment in time! It's important to me to share stories like this, the ones that reveal how ballet, and especially the humble tutu, brought so much joy into the world.
My dear tutus and fashionistas, this journey back to 2005 has rekindled a burning passion within me - to design my very own "revival tutu" that embraces all the best bits of that era! We’re talking tulle with a touch of romance, a hint of boldness and just enough playfulness to make it irresistible!
But that’s for another Tutu Tuesday, don’t you worry! Right now, I’m off to continue my ballet adventures, hopefully with a lovely cup of tea and a slice of victoria sponge.
Stay twirling, my darlings!
With love and sparkle,
Emma
