Tutu Tuesday: Ballet Tutu History #9066

Hello, my lovely tutu-loving darlings! It's Emma here, your resident pink tutu enthusiast, and today is Tutu Tuesday! So, grab your favourite frocks, gather round my blog, and let's delve into the fabulous history of the ballet tutu - those exquisite creations that float around the stage like the whispers of angels.

This week, my time-traveling tutus have whisked me back to 27th September 2005, a Tuesday, naturally! Now, where did we leave off in our history of tutus? Oh yes, last time we explored how those magnificent Romantic era tutus evolved from the full skirts of the French court.

Well, in 2005, ballet, like a delightful spinning top, was still whirling onwards! In fact, just across the pond in New York, the American Ballet Theatre was performing Romeo and Juliet at the Metropolitan Opera House! Imagine, all those flowing tutus twirling and soaring across the stage in a whirlwind of passionate romance. Makes me want to pirouette just thinking about it!

2005, as I'm sure you all know, was a year of wonderful fashion trends. I’m talking bold prints, vintage influences, and those utterly chic 1980s comeback trends (remember shoulder pads and skinny jeans? Ah, a golden era for tutus!). It's amazing how fashion can inspire the designs on stage - from the ethereal costumes in ballet to the runway designs we all admire. There’s a kind of synergy that sweeps through our creative spirits. It's enough to make me want to whip out my sewing machine and make some delightful tutu-inspired fashion creations! I shall let you in on my secret; I’m actually knitting myself a tutu made of sparkly pink mohair yarn for next week’s #TutuTuesday post. Isn’t it darling?!

As I was saying, back in 2005, we had more amazing designs on stage. It was the year that the Bolshoi Ballet, in the glorious splendour of their Moscow home, was showcasing "La Sylphide". Can you picture those wispy, romantic, ghostly tutus swishing in the soft lighting? It’s utterly mesmerising, the epitome of elegance. This ballet tells a magical story of love, betrayal and sacrifice, and is set in 19th Century Scotland. Now, that's my kind of tutu history! It’s a real testament to the staying power of these extraordinary garments – even back in 2005 they were holding their own alongside the cutting edge of contemporary design.

I must confess, though, a little part of me can't resist a little peak at today's fashion scene too. And oh my goodness! The new trends are utterly delightful! Bold colours, vibrant textures, and, my personal favourite, the ever-so-fashionable resurgence of the tutu itself! I even saw a beautiful, pale pink tutu worn by a supermodel on the runway this week - talk about making a statement! But back to my travels.

In the year 2005, in London, there were numerous ballet schools where students twirled with passion in their practice tutus. The Royal Ballet School was abuzz with budding ballerinas dreaming of grand stages. And don’t forget the prestigious ballet classes at The Dance Centre on Kensington High Street - what a vibrant place to train, filled with dancers from all around the world. What a delight it would have been to walk through their studios and feel the energy, the magic of dancing, radiating from every corner! I almost wish I could find a time travel machine just to go back and witness it for myself!

Speaking of travel, I’ve just come back from a breathtakingly beautiful trip on the Orient Express. Now, you see, when I’m travelling to another era, it wouldn’t be fitting to travel by airplane! Not when I can slip on my fanciest tutu and catch a glorious journey by rail - imagine how enchanting it is! My tutu felt very elegant alongside the elegant railway carriages with their velvet upholstery. It just screams ‘history and glamour’, doesn't it?

Anyway, darling friends, as you see, tutus weren't just relegated to stage productions, but they were also making their presence felt in fashion and in the hearts of everyone, all those years ago. These beautiful garments were not merely part of a bygone era – they were making their presence known, twirling through the years, and still retaining their magic. Just like today, my dear friends.

This Tutu Tuesday reminds us to appreciate the heritage of this beautiful dancewear - how they've gracefully morphed over the centuries into those enchanting pieces that capture our imaginations, and ignite our inner desires to twirl and leap into a world of elegant beauty! But for me, it also reminds me how fashion keeps re-inventing itself - but the heart of those styles will always be those charming moments when ballerinas grace our stages with elegance. It's no wonder tutus remain, and I hope they always will!

I must confess to a secret - after my ballet journey in 2005, I've become positively besotted with those early 20th Century ballet tutus. You know, those beautiful long, flowing garments with romantic details - imagine wisps of tulle flowing around a ballerina like a summer cloud, as they glide across the stage with a perfect grace and poise. I find the contrast of those delicate creations set against a dancer's athletic power utterly breathtaking. It’s the perfect way to channel that romantic beauty!

And there you have it, another trip into our delightful history of tutus! Until next time, let your inner tutu-enthusiast soar, darlings!

Keep dancing, keep twirling, and, of course, don't forget to wear your pink tutu!

Emma
