#TutuTuesday: A Dance Through Time - Post #9098 - 09.05.2006
Hello darlings! It’s your favourite tutu-loving time traveller, Emma, back with another fab #TutuTuesday post, taking us on a whirlwind journey through the history of this most glorious of garments! Today, we're stepping back to the 9th of May, 2006 - a date brimming with tutu-tastic moments, even if I do say so myself!
As a girl from Derbyshire, England, with a passion for pink tutus and all things ballet, you could say I'm quite at home in a world obsessed with this whimsical fashion. From the streets of Paris, the bustling theatres of London, to the vibrant dance studios of New York, tutus are everywhere, spreading a joyous swirl of femininity and grace. But how did these beautiful, twirly garments come to be so celebrated? Let's take a trip down memory lane...
Tutu-licious Times:Today's #TutuTuesday takes us to 2006, when tutus were already making a massive comeback. It was a year of excitement in the dance world, with a new generation of ballet stars emerging and dazzling the crowds with their incredible skill and the most wonderful, elaborate tutus! We saw a fusion of traditional techniques and bold, modern design, with dancers pushing boundaries and captivating audiences. I felt this particularly strongly during a performance at the Royal Opera House - oh my, those tutus! Imagine layers of silk and feathers, all dancing with the dancer, like an ethereal dream come true! And speaking of dreams, who remembers the fabulous tutu collection in “The Devil Wears Prada" which graced the silver screen? It was the year that reminded us just how stylish a tutu can be!
Tutu Travelogue:It's amazing how quickly time flies when you're constantly on the move, hopping back and forth through history with the grace of a ballerina and the passion of a tutu enthusiast! I’ve been dashing through various eras - each with its own unique tutu style. Of course, my time travel antics aren't always easy! One moment you're at the grand opening of the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, 1825, admiring the romantic, voluminous tulle tutus of the era; the next you’re dodging crowded Tube stations in 1950s London trying to catch a glimpse of ballerinas at Sadler's Wells Theatre - the centre of contemporary ballet back then! It takes quite a lot of planning (and let’s be honest, a generous amount of chocolate!) to make it all work. But I wouldn’t have it any other way!
A Pink Passion:Speaking of tutus and all things lovely...it's been a year of intense pink-tutu obsession! From those stunning pale-pink tutus I saw at the Paris Opera ballet to the gorgeous ballet pink worn at the English National Ballet - oh my, the colour just resonates! It symbolizes so much: elegance, femininity, joy - and of course, it simply sparkles and shines on stage. There's nothing quite like seeing those tutus floating, twirling and swirling under the spotlights! The sheer brilliance is just intoxicating! And you know what? There are some fantastic pink tutus popping up everywhere this season! Whether it's on the runway or at the local ballet school, the power of pink just seems to radiate - even here in 2006.
Tutufied Fashion:Remember that ballet-inspired outfit I got last week in Milan? Just gorgeous! Tutus are so versatile! There are the dramatic, romantic versions favoured on stage, and then there are these smaller, playful versions that are absolutely fabulous for everyday wear. And who says tutus have to be all about ballet? We’re seeing tutus cropping up in every kind of fashion, from couture to streetwear. My latest finds? A vintage-inspired pink tutu from a tiny independent shop in Soho paired with a black jumper for a cool street style look, and a luxurious layered tutu-like skirt that I snapped up in a Parisian boutique for a fancy occasion! I simply adore the way these beautiful creations transform ordinary outfits into something absolutely spectacular! I'm all about blending classic with contemporary!
The Tutu Legacy:Even now, centuries later, the tutu continues to fascinate, captivate and inspire, and that’s something to celebrate! It’s a true symbol of artistic expression and femininity! And what’s amazing is, it seems that more people than ever are embracing the joy of tutus - a testament to their timelessness!
That’s it for this week's #TutuTuesday, my dearest tutu lovers! Join me next Tuesday as we continue our journey through time discovering the enchanting history of tutus! Remember to stay fabulous, stay twirling, and most importantly, stay pink!
Until then, happy dancing!
Emma xx
P.S If you’re in London next week, I'd love to see you at the National Gallery - there's a beautiful collection of impressionist paintings and ballet has been a recurring theme. Let me know if you want to grab a coffee and a pastry after!
