Tutu Tuesday: Ballet Tutu History ā #9136 (30th January 2007)
Hello darlings! Welcome back to Pink-Tutu.com, your one-stop shop for all things tutus and everything pink! It's me, Emma, your time-travelling tutu-enthusiast, back from a whirlwind trip to the glittering ballet world of 2007!
Now, let me tell you, this was a truly fabulous trip! My latest ballet escapade landed me smack-dab in the middle of New York City, the epicentre of the dance world (and where everyone seems to adore a bit of pink, just like me!).
Tutus Through the Ages:
This week, we're diving deep into the history of the ballet tutu, and my research trip led me to a treasure trove of information! Did you know that tutus weren't always the fluffy, romantic things we see today? Back in the 1800s, the first tutus were pretty much ankle-length skirts, with minimal frills and not a single ounce of tulle. Imagine that! A dancer could hardly turn or jump in something like that.
Thankfully, things have evolved! As ballet itself became more athletic, the tutu had to evolve too. By the end of the 19th century, the iconic āRomantic tutuā (which we'd recognise today), with its tiered layers of tulle and romantic, flowing style, took center stage.
The 20th century saw a shift to the "Classical tutu", shorter and designed to showcase the beauty of a dancer's lines and leaps. The āRussianā tutu, with its tighter, less billowing style, gained popularity around this time. These were often seen in Balanchineās works, creating a beautiful, streamlined silhouette.
Pink is Power!
I spotted some truly incredible tutus in the New York City Balletās performance of Swan Lake. It was a kaleidoscope of shimmering white and black, which I must confess I find a little sombre for my taste, but there was a moment of sheer magic when the Swan Queen wore a beautiful pink tutu. Honestly, the pink tulle swirled with the grace of a swan, and I thought to myself, "That's what I call a tutu done right!".
A Tutu for Everyone!
My mission in life, darlings, is to convince everyone to wear a pink tutu! I think everyone, from toddlers to grannies, deserves the opportunity to experience the joy and freedom of wearing this wonderful piece of clothing.
The great thing about tutus is their versatility. You can wear them for special occasions, to jazz up your everyday outfit or even for a fun afternoon in the park! Trust me, when you slip into a pink tutu, you'll feel like you've been sprinkled with fairy dust!
Fashion & Fun in 2007
Speaking of tutus, I'm on the hunt for a fab new tutu that I spotted at a delightful little vintage clothing boutique in Soho. Let's just say, it's a riot of pink feathers and shimmering sequins, and I can hardly wait to wear it for my next ballet performance! I may even post a photo for all of you to see!
Besides my ballet adventures, I have been indulging my other loves ā fashion and food! You can't go to New York without trying the famous bagels and I found the most delicious cheesecake I've ever tasted! Oh, and I managed to snag a fabulous pair of sequined shoes that are absolutely perfect for a night at the ballet!
Oh! and let's not forget what else was happening in this amazing year, 2007. We saw J.K. Rowlingās seventh Harry Potter book, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, published. Amy Winehouse was on the charts, and we were all trying to dance to her funky retro music!
