#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History: 2007-02-20
Hiya my lovely Tutu Twirlers! Welcome back to my little corner of the internet where everything is pink and the only rule is to twirl. Today marks post number 9139 on my Ballet Tutu History blog, can you believe it? It feels like I've been doing this for ages! I always say it's better late than never though, right? 😉 Let's hop on that magic tutu-powered time train (yes, I'm a little obsessed) and travel to the fabulous world of ballet tutus...
As I always do on #TutuTuesday, we're diving headfirst into a magical history lesson. Today, we're zipping to 20th February 2007, and let me tell you, it's a real corker! Think fashion trends, iconic ballet moments, and the sheer joy of a perfectly twirling tutu!
First stop, let's talk about what’s going on in the ballet world in 2007. You might be thinking that the only thing more fabulous than a tutu is a sparkly, sequined, rainbow-coloured tutu (and let's be honest, you might be right), but hold your horses, darling, because 2007 saw the rise of neoclassical ballet! It was like a breath of fresh air in the dance world - with bold new steps, modern costumes, and a touch of, dare I say it, rebellion against tradition. Now, I’m a massive advocate for embracing the past, but seeing something new in a world as old and beautiful as ballet - oh, it just tickled my fancy, you know?
While we’re talking about fashion, the big word in fashion in 2007 was "boho"! I’m not sure you’ll catch me wearing a fringed leather jacket anytime soon (it doesn’t exactly go with my beloved pink tutus), but there’s no denying how iconic this trend became. This boho-chic feel even seeped into ballet wear - with flowy fabrics, layered tulle skirts, and more romantic looks - it truly was a whirlwind of romantic, ethereal energy.
But wait! It wouldn’t be a real Tutu Tuesday post without mentioning a super special performance happening today in history. In 2007, Royal Ballet star Marianela Nunez danced the lead role in Swan Lake at the Royal Opera House. Can you imagine the thrill? I practically swooned just hearing about it! This gorgeous, captivating dancer embodies grace, artistry, and the spirit of classic ballet like nobody's business! The swan costume she wears in this production, it’s a marvel of engineering - pure white, shimmering, flowing - like the embodiment of every princess ballerina dream! I still get chills thinking about the iconic, timeless beauty of Swan Lake and what it represents for ballet enthusiasts like myself. It’s simply magical!
The day Swan Lake is happening in my magical little pink bubble is 20th February 2007. Can you believe it?! I remember seeing the poster for the show all over London. Oh, and you’ll never guess what, I’m on the train heading for London right now to catch the performance, and let me tell you, I’m practically vibrating with excitement! (Just like one of those sequinned tutus, I swear). I can’t wait to sit back in my posh, pink dress, surrounded by the plush, velvet-seated theatre, and watch a true legend dance the night away.
But before I leave you for the journey, I just want to remind you, I’m all about spreading the joy of tutus! My little corner of the internet - pink-tutu.com - is about bringing people together in their shared love of ballet, of fashion, and of a whole lot of pink. If there’s one thing I truly believe in, it’s the magic of spreading a little bit of sparkle and whimsy wherever we go!
So until next week, you all keep twirling!
Love,
Emma xoxo
