#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History - Post Number 9184! đŸ©°

Hello darlings! Emma here, back with another whirlwind tour of the ballet tutu’s fabulous history! It’s #TutuTuesday, which means it’s time for us to dance down memory lane, so grab your tea and your favourite tutu, and let’s go!

Today we’re stepping back in time to January 1st, 2008. A crisp new year, just bursting with potential! I remember this day as if it was yesterday
because I was here, of course! 😜 It’s hard to believe it was over a decade ago now, and even though I’m a teeny bit older, my love for all things ballet hasn’t faded one bit.

Anyway, let’s dive in and find out what the ballet world was up to on this special day!

Tutus Take Centre Stage in 2008

Fashion, Fashion, Fashion! As a huge fan of all things fluffy and pink, I have to admit, the 2008 tutu scene was seriously rocking! From the classic Romantic tutus with their cascading layers to the modern, contemporary styles, tutus were absolutely everywhere!

Of course, Paris was a ballet tutu hotbed as usual, with the Opéra National de Paris always setting trends. The Ballet National de Marseille also stole the show with their striking modern pieces and daring designs. New York City Ballet, as always, maintained its sophisticated elegance, whilst The Royal Ballet kept London on its toes with its captivating, timeless performances.

Speaking of The Royal Ballet
that very same day in 2008, they were presenting their stunning performance of “The Sleeping Beauty.” Imagine! It must have been a dream come true to watch the fairies twirl and dance their way through this absolute classic! đŸ€© And I have to admit, the thought of a perfectly timed grand jetĂ© or a stunning arabesque in a magnificent white tutu makes my heart flutter a little
 😉

From Derbyshire to the World!

Speaking of dreams, remember how I told you I was in Paris on the 1st of January? *Well, the magic of ballet travel happened! *

It all started on New Year’s Eve in my charming Derbyshire hometown, where I watched a breathtaking performance of “Swan Lake” at the beautiful Buxton Opera House. Feeling completely inspired, I decided to jump on the next train out of the station – all aboard! – heading straight for the heart of Parisian ballet!

The next day I woke up to the enchanting sounds of the city and found myself at the Palais Garnier, utterly mesmerized by the opulent surroundings and buzzing energy. As a time traveller, I always manage to squeeze in a visit to the best dance shops around, so Paris was the perfect destination for me! The tutus on display were exquisite - the tulle, the embroidery, the colours
swoon! And of course, I couldn't resist bringing home a few gorgeous souvenirs to adorn my own tutu collection! đŸ›ïž

Tutu Trends That Took Flight

Did you know that tutus evolved significantly in the 20th century? Imagine the humble ballerina of the 1900s rocking the pancake tutu – that super-short, tight-fitting style! Talk about a revolution in ballerina fashion! But by the 1950s, they’d become much bigger and fluffier! It was a whole new world for tutus, and boy did they soar!

These trends, my lovely ballet enthusiasts, all came about because of the evolution of ballet technique! It's amazing to think how ballet itself has always been intertwined with its fashions. The more flexible and athletic ballerinas became, the more adventurous the costumes could be!

But it’s not just about the length or style – the material itself makes a world of difference. From lightweight silk to decadent satin and the super-versatile tulle, tutus have really embraced it all!

The rise of “soft tulle” in the 1980s, especially, revolutionised tutus – a complete transformation! It made for incredible movement and flexibility, and really added to the artistry and beauty of the dance itself. Imagine swirling around in those ethereal fabrics – utter bliss!

Embracing Your Inner Ballerina

Speaking of swirling, don't forget to check out my favourite online retailer, “Dancewear Designs”, if you need a touch of tulle in your life! * They have the most amazing selection of tutus and accessories, and everything is perfectly suited for beginners and seasoned dancers alike! *What’s better than rocking your own tutu?!

Of course, wearing one to the ballet is always a great idea. So, for your next performance or class, don’t be afraid to be a little extra! Grab your fanciest tutu and let your inner ballerina shine.

Until next week, darling dancers! Keep on dancing and stay fabulous! 💖

XOXO

Emma
