Tutu Tuesday #9190: A Twirl Through Time - February 12th, 2008

Hello my darlings, and welcome back to another exciting Tutu Tuesday on pink-tutu.com!

Today's topic? A journey through the history of the tutu, darling! Now, we're talking 2008 here, and let's be honest, it's a far cry from the classic tutu. But just imagine how much fun those ladies back in the day must have had wearing the voluminous ones. All those layers of tulle just bursting out. I mean, even though we've moved onto sleek and sassy (and sometimes even sexy!), that classic form is where it all began!

A Whirl Through The Past

It all started in the 1830s, my darlings, with Marie Taglioni (fancy, huh?). Think about the romantic era. Those were days of pure elegance, a world where delicate ballet shoes tiptoed onto the stage. You couldn't help but notice a stunning vision in tulle floating through the air. But back then, they didn't call it "tutu." Le Ballette is what they said. And let's be honest, isn't that just so chic?

Then, there was the Classical tutu – our absolute go-to favourite - with it's flowing, airy and almost cloud-like design. These were designed to show off the lines of the dancers, darling. To showcase each graceful gesture, every breathtaking movement. I'm absolutely smitten with this style, which is why you see so much of it in our tutu fashion enchantments!

The next one? The Romantic tutu - Oh! All frills and flounces, it was the definition of fairytale dreams. You can practically smell the rose petals! Just a touch shorter than its classic cousin, and with a more fluid silhouette, this style allowed the dancers to be completely at one with the music. Can you imagine? Pure romantic bliss! Just picture it swirling like a storm of petals around the stage!

Now, the tutu truly hit its stride during the 20th century. In a way, it mirrored all the social and cultural changes happening in the world, darling! We saw the "modern tutu," something a bit edgier. It went from knee length down to the ankle. Can you believe it? We've come a long way from those knee-length numbers.

But did you know the tutu has its own language? I absolutely love this. La Danse (meaning "the dance"), it whispers. Each type tells a story, conveys emotions. We have the * "pencil tutu"* a very elegant, close-fitting and flattering form which is perfect for the more contemporary performances. Then we have the * "knee tutu",* which is much shorter and very popular on ballet stages everywhere! And just think - I was born during a time when ballet's most revolutionary moves happened!

A Glimpse of Tutu Glamour Today

Right now, the world is embracing the fusion - where tutu and contemporary are finding that beautiful synergy, darling. I find myself watching all sorts of wonderful pieces in which tutu design plays a part and is not solely for traditional ballets. Imagine – we're moving into the 21st Century, where *we see our favorite dancewear worn even in the urban environment! *Isn't that just *fabulous?!

February 12th, 2008

Today marks an absolutely remarkable day! Here in London, where tutus are at their finest, I am simply beaming with excitement. The Royal Ballet at the Royal Opera House is showcasing an enchanting program titled "Ballet in One Act". I’m ready to wear my brightest pink tutu and twirl to my heart's content!

Afterward, I plan a bit of retail therapy, darlings! My eyes are set on a shop just around the corner from Covent Garden - it’s the epitome of tutus – "Dances of London". You simply cannot leave this shop without falling in love with tutu fashion treasures!

I can't wait to discover those hidden gems among the mountains of tulle, and even better, I can share all the best bits with you. Stay tuned, darling, I promise to tell you everything about my shopping trip - including where I can find that perfect little pink tutu that's perfect for you!

Until then, keep on twirling! And if you happen to see me, be sure to give me a whirl. My name is Emma.

Love and happy twirling! Emma xx
