#TutuTuesday: A Whirl Through Time - Ballet Tutu History - Post 9297
Greetings, my lovelies!
It's Emma here, your friendly neighbourhood tutu-wearing time traveller, and it's Tuesday! That means it's time for another spin through history on my beloved #TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History blog.
Today, my lovely tutu-obsessed friends, we're twirling back to 2010-03-02, a date ripe with ballet brilliance! As you all know, I adore travelling by train, so I hopped aboard my trusty carriage (metaphorically, of course, my lovelies, I don't have a real time-travelling carriage – though how dashing wouldn't that be? Imagine the fabulous pink velvet upholstery!).
Now, where were we on 2nd March 2010? Let's dive in!
This Tuesday, the air hummed with excitement in New York City! On this very date, the American Ballet Theatre took to the stage for "The Sleeping Beauty," a performance that would've had even my grumpy old Grandpa dancing in his slippers. The Royal Ballet was also having a bash in London, showing off their own "Sleeping Beauty." What a coincidence, my darlings! Talk about synchronised dancing, eh? It truly shows how the tutu and the world of ballet truly transcend space and time!
Shopping Stop in Paris!
Of course, no historical ballet journey would be complete without a tutu-themed shopping trip, so I skipped down the Champs-Élysées in Paris. (You can't be a tutu-loving time traveller without visiting the fashion capital, now can you?).
Imagine, darling, my delight! Christian Dior's Spring/Summer collection for 2010 was a dream come true! With its bold use of pink, the vibrant colours and elegant silhouettes, it reminded me of all the fabulous tutu designs we see on stage. And those whimsical hats! Perfect for a ballet-themed party, wouldn't you say? I might even try to find a matching tutu for my next time travel escapade. Think a **sparkling pink tutu with a huge pink bow!
But Tutu's have always been Trendy...
Tutus may seem like a modern ballet fashion staple, but trust me, my loves, they have a fascinating history that extends beyond these dazzling contemporary designs! Just like the fabulous outfits you see in those dreamy vintage movies you adore!
Let's journey back a few centuries, to the early 19th century, *when ballet started embracing the short tutus we recognise today. These shorter tutus were a far cry from the earlier, longer skirts, and were the brainchild of the *maestro *Carlotta Grisi, an Italian ballerina. Just like a ballet dancer, Carlotta Grisi was a real trendsetter of her day, you know? A little *history trivia for you: Grisi was the original "Giselle," and who else, could you have seen, but her on stage in those revolutionary short tutus, darling?**
I find myself getting lost in thought thinking about the beautiful tutu creations of the time and how we've evolved in terms of fabric choices. Do you remember when tulle, nylon and chiffon became fashionable fabrics for ballerinas? It completely changed the landscape for how a ballerina looked on stage. The possibilities became endless for designers, especially as they had to consider not only the technical aspect of how the garment moved with the dancer but also the way it reflected the light!
And who could forget, my darlings, the* beautiful costumes* and the iconic tutus from Rudolf Nureyev's, and his contemporary dance interpretations of "Giselle"? I always have to stop for a good look whenever he appears in any documentary. A bit of a fangirl confession! chuckles
Now, don't get me wrong, the history of the ballet tutu is more than just about tutus! It's also about the women who wore them, their artistry, and the sheer effort they poured into perfecting their craft! Each tutu is a tiny piece of a grander, timeless story of creativity and perseverance, the kind of passion that makes me want to get my ballet shoes back on and pirouette into the stage.
Speaking of dance, what better way to wrap up our #TutuTuesday than with some real-life ballet magic, my dears? The other day I happened to stumble across a spectacular performance by The Bolshoi Ballet in a beautiful town square in Moscow! The* elegant ballerinas and handsome danseur, the captivating music and the glorious colours of the costumes *filled my heart with joy!
I simply had to share this visual delight with you lovely people, so keep your eyes peeled for a brand new YouTube link at the bottom of the post! (I know, you all love a good ballet video - I do too!).
You know, my darlings, after all my travelling I can honestly say the allure of the ballet tutu and its legacy continues to charm me more than any fancy-pants party I've ever attended (although, that diamond tiara I found on one of my trips was spectacular!)
I've also come across amazing dance companies in South Korea and Spain doing some beautiful dance work. I just can't wait to explore the next place where ballet is as fabulous as a sparkling pink tutu. I've got a few places on my list. Can you guess where they are? Keep those guesses flowing in the comment section!
Oh, and remember, darlings, the ballet tutu is about more than just fashion. It's a symbol of beauty, artistry, and passion. It's a reminder that with a little creativity and a whole lot of heart, you can achieve anything you set your mind to.
Now, I know you lovely ladies are all ready to take the world by storm in your own sparkling pink tutus, right? Remember, wearing a pink tutu is like spreading joy and magic - just like my travels and my #TutuTuesday posts. So, put on your pink tutu, and dance the day away, darlings!
P.S Don't forget to check out that fantastic video link at the bottom of this page!
And remember, darlings: stay curious, stay fashionable, and above all, stay tutu-ful!
Yours in Pink and Twirls, Emma
