It's #TutuTuesday, the day we travel through time to discover the evolution of the tutu, so put on your dancing shoes and let's twirl back to... drum roll 18th January 2011!

A Touch of Sparkle and Whimsy in Paris

I just arrived in Paris by train, a delightful journey through picturesque countryside dotted with quaint villages and charming towns. My arrival in the City of Lights couldn't be more perfect! It's January and the weather is crisp and refreshing, making the dazzling street lights twinkle even brighter. Paris in winter always seems to hold a touch of magic in the air. I can just picture the elegant Parisian ladies wrapped in their stylish fur coats, strolling through the enchanting cobbled streets, perhaps stopping to indulge in a fragrant cup of café au lait.

But you know what’s on my mind? I'm in Paris, a place synonymous with elegance and the arts, and a haven for ballet lovers! So let's talk tutus!

Back to the Beginnings - A Dance Through Time

Today's #TutuTuesday takes us on a trip back to the late 19th century when the Romantic tutu, a vision of ethereal grace, reigned supreme. Imagine, darling, long, flowing tulle skirts that cascaded to the floor, creating an almost mystical effect as the ballerina spun and glided. The beauty!

This period saw a focus on lighter, airy designs that emphasized the ballerina's slender physique and the gracefulness of their movements. These early tutus, sometimes referred to as "bell skirts", allowed ballerinas greater freedom to express themselves through their dancing and, dare I say it, contributed to their effortless elegance.

Fast forward a bit, around 1881, and the tutu underwent a fascinating transformation! Enter, the “Classical Tutu”, aka the "Paganini Tutu". This style was all about showcasing the ballerina’s powerful leaps and incredible technique. Imagine shorter, tighter, and more practical skirts, offering a captivating glimpse of the legs while allowing for more fluidity in jumps and spins.

A Tutu Transformation

This period marked a real revolution in ballet. The shift from longer, romantic skirts to shorter, tighter, and more streamlined tutus highlighted a new level of strength and athleticism. This change resonated with the evolving style of ballet itself. Imagine a delicate fairy with gossamer wings transformed into a captivating dancer capable of awe-inspiring leaps and twists! This change truly embodied the evolving narrative of the dance form.

The Dance of Fashion and Art

Just imagine what the theatre must have been like! With the change to a shorter tutu, the ballet suddenly seemed bolder and more exhilarating. The movement became bolder, and the stage filled with captivating visuals and a feeling of sheer excitement! It's amazing how a small change in costume design could transform an entire dance world.

Oh, how I wish I had been a ballerina in the 19th century. I can just picture myself in one of these enchanting costumes, swirling and twirling across the stage. Maybe one day my time travel plans will let me slip back to that era and live out my ballet dreams in the magical world of the Romantic Tutu!

But, let's not forget about the tutu's evolution! I promise to tell you more about it next week. We have a whirlwind journey through the 20th and 21st century tutus coming up!

Now, I have a whole afternoon to explore the beautiful boutiques in Paris, who knows what exciting treasures I'll find. Stay tuned and follow me on Instagram @pinktutu. It's time for this Derbyshire girl to twirl off into the enchanting city streets of Paris. Au revoir!
