Tutu Tuesday: Ballet Tutu History #9350 - 8th March 2011 - A Blast from the Past!

Hello lovelies! It's your favourite tutu-clad time traveller, Emma, back with another thrilling dive into the fascinating world of ballet history. Today we're whisking ourselves back to 8th March 2011 - can you believe it's been that long? Time just flies when you're dancing, darling!

Today's post is all about tutus - those iconic fluffy wonders that twirl like a dream! As a self-proclaimed tutu-aficionado, it wouldn't be #TutuTuesday without a journey into the past to discover what magical creations were sweeping across the stage all those years ago.

So, let's step into the time machine, don our pinkest tutus, and travel to 2011...

The World in 2011: Ballet's Bright Spotlight

Remember the world back in 2011? Facebook was king, we all carried around smartphones (which seemed absolutely gigantic at the time!), and everyone was buzzing about that other social media platform that was taking the world by storm - Twitter! As for the world of ballet, it was all about stunning technique, graceful choreography, and - you guessed it - breathtaking tutus!

On this very date, 8th March 2011, the international ballet scene was brimming with talent. In London, The Royal Ballet was wowing audiences with Giselle - that exquisite ballet with its romantic story, poignant music, and those show-stopping white tutus. Over in New York City, American Ballet Theatre was showcasing their brilliance in Swan Lake, that beautiful ballet that sees dancers transforming from innocent swans to black swans - with even more sensational tutus! And across the world, dancers were pushing boundaries and showcasing incredible artistic feats.

But don't let all those dramatic ballets fool you. In 2011, there was also a growing buzz for something exciting and new โ€“ contemporary dance! While the tutus may not have been quite as prominent, contemporary dance was creating a powerful wave, and ballet schools were beginning to integrate these contemporary styles into their curriculums.

And speaking of schools, did anyone else find themselves absolutely obsessed with the ballet movie 'Black Swan' that came out that year? We were all gripped by the intense drama, the sheer passion, and, of course, the intricate costumes. Even though that black tutu is a little more daring than my usual pink ones, you can't deny it's a breathtaking masterpiece.

Tutus from the Past - a History Unfolded

So what exactly was everyone wearing back in 2011? Well, the classic tutu forms, such as the romantic tutu and the bell tutu, remained in vogue. The romantic tutu, a delicate masterpiece with several layers of tulle and an airy, romantic design, is a classic choice for romantic and expressive ballets. You just can't beat its ethereal grace and elegance!

The bell tutu, with its graceful flare and shape, was another staple, often gracing performances like Swan Lake and Sleeping Beauty. Remember the iconic white tutus for the white swans in Swan Lake with their tiers of white tulle? Well, let me tell you, those tutus are everything! They're like tiny clouds dancing on stage.

We also started seeing a shift towards contemporary tutus around this time, with designers introducing more intricate and expressive forms. These designs may not have the classic layers of tulle, but they embraced exciting silhouettes and innovative textures. And remember that the long, flowing tutu, reminiscent of the ballerinas of yore, made a triumphant comeback! Imagine long tulle layers flowing down a ballerina's legs - it's like magic come to life!
