#TutuTuesday: A Whirlwind Tour of Tutu History! 🩰

Post Number 9361

Hello lovelies! It's your favourite pink-tutu-clad time traveller, Emma, back with another dive into the history of ballet's most iconic garment – the tutu! As always, it's a TutuTuesday and we're off on a grand adventure. Today, my lovely readers, we're taking a trip back in time to the 24th of May, 2011. Buckle up, because this is going to be a real whirlwind!

A Trip Through Time, A Dress Through the Ages:

You'd think we could hop on a magical time travelling carriage like in Cinderella, but unfortunately, no fairy godmothers in sight. Instead, my trusty train ticket will have to do! Chug chug I'm off to find out where our much-loved tutus have come from!

If you think the tutu is all about frills and fluff, you'd be partly right – but the tutu is also an emblem of freedom, grace, and technical brilliance! Imagine a tiny dancer, all ribbons and sparkle, defying gravity with every leap and turn!

Before the Tutu... A Peek at History's Dress Rehearsal

Before we step onto the stage of the tutu's glory, let's take a quick look behind the curtain. Did you know that the very first ballerinas were essentially dressed in long, flowing gowns? I mean, can you even imagine a grand jeté in those?! That would be quite the sight!

It wasn't until the late 1700s and early 1800s, in Italy and France, that women began wearing what we might call the tutu's great-great-grandmother. They wore shorter skirts that allowed more freedom of movement – an exciting new wave of grace and agility!

The "Romantische" Revolution and the "Romantic Tutu":

And then, around 1830, a revolution in dance and dress! Imagine Marie Taglioni, a pioneering dancer, appearing on stage in a stunning creation: a loose, flowing, knee-length skirt made from white tulle. A tutu with the feel of a beautiful wisp of smoke. This, my friends, was the Romantic tutu.

It embodied the dreamy, delicate essence of Romanticism – think sweeping melodies, emotional intensity, and the desire to express something magical through dance!

The Tutu Evolves: The Rise of the "Classical Tutu":

Fast forward a bit, and the "Classical Tutu," with its dramatic cone-shaped design, comes strutting onto the scene! Think "Swan Lake," think "The Sleeping Beauty," think... well, just think majestic!

Now, in 2011, we see this fabulous creation all over the stage. It is the ultimate symbol of power and artistry, allowing dancers to move with even greater precision and grace. But I must admit, I also have a soft spot for the Romantic tutu, that wispy, airy look...

What's Going On In the Ballet World On May 24th, 2011?

Back to our time-travel adventures! What was happening in the world of ballet on the 24th of May 2011? This is always my favourite part – I get to immerse myself in the world of performances, news, and all things ballet!

Let's see... Hmm...

Well, I hear it was a grand Tuesday in the world of ballet! A performance of "Swan Lake" graced the stage in London at the Royal Opera House, and there was also a thrilling "Giselle" performance taking place in the beautiful Palais Garnier in Paris! It's certainly a week to inspire any aspiring ballerina.

The ballet world, just like any other industry, loves a new fashion trend. 2011 saw a lot of attention on tutu designs incorporating colour, bold embellishments and textures. A trend that's sure to spark imagination and a love of ballet's magic in everyone!

Our Tutu Tuesday Must-Haves!

I just have to confess, 2011 seems like a year of great style. You'll see all the ballet dancers on stage in those magnificent tulle and lace numbers – think black, white, pastel pinks... divine! And it was also the era of tutus paired with ballet flats! Oh my! We see dancers off the stage pairing those graceful and comfortable flats with jeans and elegant dresses, taking ballet’s elegance with them everywhere!

What are the must-have accessories for any tutu lover in 2011? A great pair of ballerina shoes, a beautiful ballet scarf, a hair ribbon to tie back your tresses – perhaps a tiara to be truly extra?! And, of course, the perfect pink tutu!

My Ballet Wardrobe: A Symphony of Pink!

I am completely in love with all these styles, but I am also in love with finding vintage pieces. I'm always on the lookout for unique tutus that could easily grace a theatre stage. You know what they say – never say never when it comes to the world of fashion, and never say never when it comes to the perfect tutu!

A beautiful silk, a sparkling satin, the fluff of the tulle and the softest lace – these are the elements that bring tutus to life! The key? The perfect pop of pink. A little bit of my favourite shade always adds that magical touch!

I mean, pink tutus just exude grace, playfulness and a little bit of a sweet sparkle! Why not embrace a bit of colour and celebrate the world of ballet! I dare you – wear a pink tutu and feel the confidence of a ballerina radiating around you!

From Tutu to Travel:

I may be a ballet blogger, but I'm also a travel fanatic! And this is where I share my adventures and give you some tips on travelling around with a tutu in tow!

Of course, you might need to be a little creative about keeping it in tip-top shape when you’re on the move! I always bring along a travel steamer, especially if it's going to be a long journey. And for those extra special occasions, I never forget my favourite pink satin luggage bag!

A Little Bit of Derbyshire...

Now, I'm off back to my roots, to the heart of Derbyshire in England. I always say – you don’t have to be a dancer to embrace the elegance of a tutu, it's a statement, an inspiration, a piece of magic you can carry with you everywhere. A touch of ballet to brighten your day – it doesn’t get any better than that, right?

Keep twirling and stay sparkling, darlings! And remember, even the smallest, most simple tutu can carry a big story – the story of joy, elegance and a little bit of pink!

Your Time Traveller in Pink,

Emma.
