#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History - A Whirl Through Time!

Hello darling, and welcome to another edition of #TutuTuesday! I’m Emma, your resident tutu-obsessed blogger, coming to you live from... wait for it... drumroll Paris! The city of lights, the home of haute couture, and my absolute favourite place to be when it comes to ballet and fashion.

Today is August 23rd, 2011, and the Parisian air is buzzing with excitement for the upcoming ballet season. You wouldn't believe the number of tutus I've seen fluttering around this fabulous city, and let me tell you, pink is the colour of the season!

This week, we're going to take a little trip through history, all while wearing our favourite pink tutus. Grab a cuppa, settle in, and let’s twirl back through the ages to see how these incredible garments came to be!

A Tiny Glimpse of the Past

Imagine, if you will, a world before the glorious tulle tutu. A world where dancers wore, dare I say it, ordinary clothing? Gasp! Yes, dear readers, this was the sad truth for ballet before the 1800s. Thankfully, the brilliant, brilliant Marie Taglioni changed the game with her iconic performance in La Sylphide. Imagine: a beautiful ballerina flitting about in a billowing, delicate, gasp! white tutu! It was groundbreaking, it was revolutionary, and it sent the world of ballet into a whole new era of grace and ethereal beauty.

From White to... EVERYTHING!

So, tutues were born, but you wouldn't be seeing pink just yet. Early tutus were mainly white, but don't worry, darling, that’s about to change! You see, as ballet developed, and as choreographers started telling more elaborate stories through their art, so did the variety of colours in their tutus!

The Power of Pink

Now, imagine my delight, because it was in the early 20th century that the divine colour of pink burst onto the ballet scene! You know me, my love for pink is unyielding, and it fills my heart with such joy to know it's been brightening stages for well over a century. Pink tutus embody a lightness, a charm, and a whimsicalness that's absolutely perfect for ballet. Think of all those darling Sugar Plum fairies - divine in their pink, don’t you think?

#TutuTuesday - A Touch of Glamour

From the first whispers of the tutu to the dazzling array of colours that exist today, we’ve journeyed through history with the grace and fluidity of a pirouette. The tutu is much more than just a piece of clothing; it’s a symbol of artistry, grace, and a whimsical touch of magic!

You can catch me performing at the Theatre du Chatelet this week, and of course, I'll be rocking my best pink tutu - it’s practically mandatory! 😉

So tell me, dear readers, what’s your favourite type of tutu? Is it classic, romantic, or perhaps something a little more modern? Do you love it in white, black, pink or all of the above? I’d love to hear all about your tutu preferences! Don't forget to leave your comments below, and of course, show off your #TutuTuesday spirit! Until next week, remember to dance like nobody’s watching...

Happy twirling, darlings!

XOXO

Emma

P.S. If you're travelling in France like I am, why not hop on a train to Bordeaux? The city of wine is bursting with exciting cultural events right now, and I’m simply dying to try out their tarte tropézienne, a delectable treat from this lovely part of France. You can join me! I’m posting details on www.pink-tutu.com about how to get there in my next post. Stay tuned!
