Tutu Tuesday #9401: A Whirlwind Tour Through Time (and Tutus!)

Hey gorgeous girlies! It's Emma, your friendly neighbourhood tutu enthusiast, back again with another extra edition of #TutuTuesday! This week, we're time-hopping all the way back to 2012-02-28! Now, before you get too excited about my fancy time-traveling shenanigans (trust me, it’s way more complicated than hopping on a magical train!), I must confess - my pink tutu's been through quite the transformation. I mean, who needs glitter in 2012, right? Imagine all the fabric...and those darling little ballet shoes! Oh my goodness, you wouldn’t believe how simple everything is. No glitter bombs in sight! But don't worry, girlies, I've been keeping my eye on those vintage finds for you! You’ll be swirling and twirling like true ballerinas in no time!

Let’s Talk Tutus: A Dash Through History!

You know, those delicate, graceful tulle creations we call tutus have had quite the adventurous journey! They started as…gasp…practical?! Back in the early days, around 1830, they were basically fancy skirts! Not those puffy, romantic delights we see on stage now. They were flat, flowing, and mostly for those charming Parisian women in ballrooms (remember ballrooms?! So chic). But as times went on, around the mid 1800s, designers started going crazy with layers and layers and layers of tulle. It became like, ‘More is more’, my darling! This resulted in those amazing billowing, layered tutus we're obsessed with!

You can totally imagine the swoosh of those fabulous layers as ballerinas gracefully glide across the stage, right? I swear, it feels like a whirlwind just watching! Just like my travels! Oh, it’s a truly beautiful and historically interesting piece of fashion history. And believe me, you can definitely still get that dramatic swoosh look today with some great tulle fabric and a sprinkle of fairy dust! ;)

Twirling Back to 2012

Back in my favourite year of all (that's right, 2012! This little Derbyshire lass loves a good throwback), the ballet world was absolutely exploding with amazing dancers. You had your classics like Sylvie Guillem and Darcey Bussell gracing stages around the world. Imagine Swan Lake, Giselle, Sleeping Beauty, these gorgeous productions! And it's not just about the dancers, but the incredible designers, the musicians, and the entire artistic symphony. I felt like I was caught in a swirling ballet, being transported all around the globe on a whirlwind of elegance and artistry! Cue the happy sigh...sigh

It’s a wonder I found time to travel at all! In the last month or so, I have enjoyed catching a stunning performance of “Don Quixote” at The Royal Opera House and a beautiful* *Royal Ballet performance of *Swan Lake at Sadler’s Wells* before a special “Matilda the Musical” performance in the West End. Oh and did I mention a special visit to* Birmingham Hippodrome Theatre and The Lowry in Salford? I had to grab a fabulously over-the-top tulle number to celebrate, darling, I mean, who could resist a shopping spree after such glamorous ballet outings, right?!

Speaking of tutus... let’s take a moment to remember one of the most legendary tutu designers in the whole world: Caroline Castigliano! Oh my, have you seen some of her work? So whimsical! So stunning! She just gets it.

But back to 2012. Imagine the world!

This is it: A Glimpse at the Year 2012!

Well, let's see... 2012! It’s the year the world held its breath! We all sat, glued to the screens, watching the Olympics. There was such a special atmosphere of national pride. Remember Team GB? I still have chills just thinking about those dazzling Olympic athletes representing our little island!

In 2012, social media became absolutely massive. All the coolest girls started to post their fabulous #TutuTuesday outfits all over Instagram (and Snapchat – who would have thought it?!) It's just brilliant to see how much ballet is starting to be part of the everyday world! You know, I always knew our little pink tutus were magic! They make people smile, they inspire others, and it’s such a great way to bring everyone together.

Speaking of the magic of tutus, do you know who has one of the best fashion sense in all of pop music? Well, look no further than Taylor Swift, my dearest. She practically wears one every day – and why not? You go, girl! It’s just so fabulous to see tutus go mainstream and inspire people around the world. I bet even her kitten has its own little tutu!

And for this Tutu Tuesday...

So, girlies, my advice is: Go for all the swirling and twirling! Don't be afraid to make a statement in a gorgeous tutu – you’re not just a ballerina – you're a fashionista too! It's always tutu Tuesday, right?! But if it’s not… well then, let's just make it tutu Tuesday anyway!!

I can’t wait to travel back in time next week and see all the wonders of tutu history awaits! See you all then, my lovely tutulettes!

P.S. Have I mentioned I love pink? You know my next trip has to be somewhere with a lovely pink castle – I just can't resist a touch of pastel elegance!
