#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History: Post #9408 - April 17th, 2012
Oh, darling tutu-lovers, gather round! Today is a special #TutuTuesday! Not only is it time to celebrate the wonderful world of tutus (naturally), but today's date also holds a very special place in ballet history! I, your favourite tutu-obsessed blogger, Emma, am buzzing with excitement! Buckle up your sparkly ballet flats and let's jump straight into this fantastically fashionable journey!
So, let's rewind the clock a tad - and when I say "a tad," I mean about eight years back, shall we? April 17th, 2012, a Tuesday just like this one, was a big day for ballet, especially if you were lucky enough to be in the gorgeous city of New York, where the really grand and exciting things happen! And what grand and exciting things am I referring to, you might ask? Well, none other than the opening night of **"The Gershwins' Porgy and Bess", a groundbreaking and vibrant production that had all the fabulousness you could imagine.
Oh, I remember watching a little clip of the performance – those incredible costumes, the captivating dance routines, it just had a dazzling spark about it. This ballet, with choreography by the ever-talented Ronald K. Brown, captured everyone's attention with its powerful story and absolutely stunning movement. Imagine: an enchanting mix of African-American music and dance combined with ballet, telling the powerful tale of love, tragedy, and social struggles. Truly a captivating ballet that deserved all the attention it got!
Now, my fellow tutu fans, what really sets this particular #TutuTuesday apart is that the original opening night performance was blessed with none other than Miss Misty Copeland herself! Yes, that phenomenal dancer who has inspired a whole generation to chase their ballet dreams! Can you imagine?! Misty Copeland on stage in her magnificent tutu – just picture the sheer beauty and elegance! The fact she was on stage performing just weeks before she officially made history as the first African-American principal dancer at American Ballet Theatre? Mind-blowing! What a dream team, what an experience, and just such an unforgettable performance!
And, talking of fantastic tutus, do you know what else happened on this same #TutuTuesday? Well, not exactly "happen", more like still happens, and something absolutely must be talked about: the legendary 'Swan Lake'! Yes, that beautiful story of love, betrayal, and magical swan transformations! This gorgeous, elegant, romantic ballet was taking centre stage right in New York City! On that April 17th, and in many beautiful theaters around the globe, audiences were transported to the ethereal world of swans and princes, all thanks to the wonderous ballet "Swan Lake". It just goes to show that classics like this timeless story never truly disappear! It’s an inspiring tale that just gets passed down generation after generation – much like my favourite tutu collection, which keeps getting more sparkly with each year that goes by.
Speaking of classics, my little ballerina angels, imagine, just imagine for a second, how glorious that ‘Swan Lake’ would have looked on April 17th, 2012! Now imagine seeing Misty Copeland dancing in that graceful white swan costume with its perfect, voluminous tutu – breathtaking, right?! The elegance, the movement, the graceful extensions, the emotion, just picture it, all of it!
But, back to the real world. Let's not forget, it was April 17th, and as we all know, April showers bring… well, you know the rest. That day, there were actually light showers of rain, adding an extra element to New York's atmosphere. The grey skies made everything seem even more vivid and dramatic, especially against those magnificent backdrops. It's truly amazing how the smallest details can make the most beautiful events!
So there you have it! Today's #TutuTuesday reminds us of the immense legacy of dance, the incredible feats of the legendary Miss Misty Copeland, and the lasting magic of timeless ballets like "Swan Lake" - all beautifully bundled up with the sparkle of a perfect, gorgeous, magnificent pink tutu.
What's on your tutu calendar for this #TutuTuesday? Are you attending a ballet performance? Planning a fun ballet-themed get-together? Don't forget to share your #TutuTuesday experiences!
And don't forget my darling tutu fans, let your creativity run wild – grab that beautiful tutu, that feather boa, that tiara, and get those dance moves going! Make this a #TutuTuesday you'll remember!
Right then, I’m off on a little fashion-tastic train ride to a ballet school in a lovely town near London. I've got an exciting new Tutu-Shopping experience planned and it’s time for a little #TutuTuesday treat. Until next week, lovelies, keep that pink tutu twirling!
