#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History - 9455 🩰

Hello, darlings! It’s your favourite pink-tutu-wearing, ballet-obsessed time traveller, Emma, back with another dose of tutu history. As always, grab a cuppa and let's dive into the past…

Twirling back to March 12th, 2013

Ooh, this one's a bit special! Can you believe it's been over a decade since this day? We were still deep in the throes of the “Gangnam Style” craze, “Skyfall” was the song everyone was humming, and the world was anticipating the arrival of the newest iPhone… which apparently was just slightly different to the last one (don't get me started on phone evolution, darling! Some things just shouldn’t change).

Ballet happenings in 2013:

Ah, ballet… much more interesting. This was a big year for new productions, darling! The Royal Ballet premiered Wayne McGregor's "Woolf Works" – can you imagine? A three-part ballet exploring Virginia Woolf's writings. Talk about dramatic! In Paris, the Ballet de l'Opéra de Paris was taking a dive into the world of myth with their staging of "Orpheus and Eurydice". And right here in my beloved London, the English National Ballet was charming everyone with their enchanting production of “Giselle” - a classic that never fails to take my breath away.

But back to tutus…

Did you know, 2013 was a year of transition for tutu designs? We were seeing a bit more of a departure from the traditional. Designers were experimenting with softer, more flowing shapes, taking inspiration from nature, or even using interesting textures to give the tutu an even more ethereal quality. And oh, those colours! Think soft lavender, pale peach, and even some adventurous blues and greens. Such artistry!

Fashion inspiration for your own pink tutu adventures!

Personally, I've been on a pink mission. Nothing screams femininity like a sparkling, voluminous, perfectly-pink tutu. Imagine the looks you'll get when you walk into that next cocktail party!

So, for those of you who want to channel a bit of 2013 ballerina glamour, here's a bit of a fashion flashback:

  • Get those layers going: Think wispy tulle, delicate chiffon, and layers upon layers. The more voluminous, the better!

  • Embrace the flow: Remember those gentle, fluid shapes? That's your goal here, darling. Think skirts that ripple and move with you as you walk.

  • Sparkle, sparkle, sparkle!: It's all about catching the light, darling. A little bit of sparkle never hurts! Embellishments are a MUST. Sequins, beads, anything that shimmers and reflects – just think about all the "oooohhs" and "aaahhhs" you'll get!

  • Think pretty in pink: Okay, maybe you aren't as crazy about pink as I am. But you don't have to go all-out pink! Just add a dash of it here and there for that feminine touch. A pink sash, a delicate pink bow... and for you bolder babes, a pink tutu under a sheer overlay (it's surprisingly flattering!).

Tutu history is important:

It's more than just sparkly skirts, darlings. It's a symbol of beauty, elegance, and strength. When you wear a tutu, you embody grace, creativity, and the spirit of movement. It's about being you, being free, and expressing your inner artist.

I have a feeling that the trend for soft, feminine, expressive styles is here to stay. It’s an incredible era in tutu design!

Much love,

Emma xx
