#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History - Post #9474 (2013-07-23)

Hello, darling tutufarians! Welcome back to Pink Tutu ā€“ your weekly dose of tutu-tastic history! Today's topic is all about the magic of tutus, but in true #TutuTuesday style, it's sprinkled with a touch of historical glam! Iā€™ve been travelling around Europe by train ā€“ itā€™s SO much more fun than flying, I can bring so many beautiful shoes and outfits with me. Honestly, a train journey with your best sparkly friend is so stylish and allows you to feel properly chic and graceful. Plus, there is nothing more divine than having a little wander around the station shop for more pretty bits and bobsā€¦ tutti frutti. Anyway, back to tutus, my lovelies!

Letā€™s go back in time, right back toā€¦ well, not that far! Just a few hundred years, shall we? Back in the 1800s, tutus were not the frothy, magnificent things they are today. Oh no! They were simple, very plain, knee-length skirtsā€¦ actually, kind of boring, if Iā€™m honest. Boooring. And they were only for ballet dancers, not ordinary people, ugh! I mean, think about it. Tututicles could be amazing for any occasion: a wedding, a picnic, a visit to the theatreā€¦ I really think there is a whole world of potential to unlock in tutus and tututicles. Anyway, all the fashion icons of the 1800s were totally missing a trickā€¦ But times do change, donā€™t they?

A little while later, Marie Taglioni happened. This amazing ballerina totally rocked the world with her dancing - she was just so graceful and captivating! But it was her tutus, specifically, that made everyone's jaw drop. Boom! Think floaty, romantic, ethereal, beautiful, made of tulle and with multiple layers of chiffon, it justā€¦ looked SO amazing! And you know what? Everyone absolutely loved it! (Thatā€™s good because the other tutu styles werenā€™t doing a whole lot!) Finally a tutu style that brought the attention to the dancerā€™s beautiful formā€¦ Yes please! She made the tutu become a true star. You could almost hear the crowds whisper "Isn't that incredible!?" or ā€œIsnā€™t that simply breathtaking!ā€ and ā€œThose movements are exquisite!ā€ You know, thatā€™s the kind of response we want to be giving!

Today, we have SO many different tutus! From the short, poufy, and playful "tutu de basque" to the long and glamorous "tutu a la Roman," tutus have really grown in style! Theyā€™re all so inspiring in a wayā€¦ They are about grace, beauty, freedomā€¦ and most importantlyā€¦ a touch of whimsical magic, a dash of extra that lifts the mood and gives everyone a smile on their faces.

Even today in 2013, in London's West End, I'm absolutely loving how some amazing dancers have really taken to incorporating the ā€œtutu-styleā€ look with modern street wear and ballet choreography, and incorporating the street/theater look into their performances. There are actually dance competitions with people really putting on the ultimate tutu fashion show! Now thatā€™s a party worth celebrating!

Now, don't forget ā€“ I am a firm believer in pink. Pink and tutus are just meant to be together! They just glow when they're paired up, and make such a lovely visual combination - pink gives a real feeling of lightness, of magicā€¦ And, I think thatā€™s why tutus are so incredibly special - they remind us of all the wonderful, joyous, and vibrant things life has to offer. Just picture it: a whole world of pink tutus!. I think it would be a magical and gorgeous sight.

Remember my lovely tututicles! Don't be afraid to experiment, to wear a tutu, to try out a new colorā€¦ embrace the fun in fashion! Make the most of it! And while you are at it, donā€™t forget, #TutuTuesday is the perfect day to grab your fanciest, most wonderful tutu. Maybe weā€™ll see you there on the next one.

Keep your tutus sparkling!

Emma xoxo
