#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History - Post #9495 - 17th December 2013
Oh, hello darlings! Welcome back to Pink-Tutu.com, where every Tuesday is #TutuTuesday! Today's journey takes us back through time, to discover the enchanting story of the ballet tutu. It’s a fascinating journey, with tales of fluttering tulle, shimmering silk, and the graceful steps of history’s greatest ballerinas!
I’m so excited to be travelling in time today, hopping on a grand steam train straight from London, and I’m positively brimming with festive spirit. You see, London in December is simply magical. I popped into Fortnum & Mason to admire the gorgeous Christmas window displays – truly stunning! And the aroma of roasting chestnuts, freshly baked mince pies, and fragrant Christmas trees floating in the air… divine! Of course, a trip to London isn't complete without a visit to the Royal Opera House. And believe me, their Christmas season is simply divine, filled with exquisite productions and the most talented ballerinas. It's enough to make any tutu enthusiast weak at the knees!
But enough about my delightful London escapades, let’s talk tutus! Today’s #TutuTuesday topic is all about those ethereal and elegant creations, so gather round and let me tell you the tale of the ballet tutu’s magnificent journey through time.
Act One: A Story of Fashion and Flow
Imagine this: 1830s, Paris, a time of revolutionary creativity in the world of fashion. While ladies of society sported opulent crinolines and full skirts, the ballerinas were taking to the stage in, well… something quite different. Back then, ballet was still finding its voice, with the grand costumes mirroring the dramatic nature of the era. Picture this – swirling silk, tight-fitting corsets, and layers upon layers of fabric, all to capture the spirit of romanticism. And then, enter Marie Taglioni. This enchanting dancer, with her graceful steps and breathtaking artistry, felt restricted by the heavy, voluminous costumes.
This marked a turning point. Imagine the scene: a stage lit by gaslight, Taglioni steps out, her movements lighter than air. Gone are the heavy skirts, replaced by a whisper of fabric - a tutu! A shortened skirt with several layers of tulle, billowing out like a beautiful cloud. Suddenly, the focus wasn't just on the dance, it was on the graceful, fluid movements. The audience watched in awe, mesmerized by the ethereal beauty of this new design.
Act Two: A Flourish of Tulle and Design
The romantic tutu of Taglioni's era wasn’t the same tutu you see today. Over time, the ballet tutu evolved, going through different shapes and styles, a testament to the ever-changing world of dance. But that's the magic of the ballet tutu: It captures a fleeting moment in time, but it also allows for constant adaptation, evolution and expression. We have to thank those brave and talented ballerinas like Carlotta Grisi and Fanny Elssler, who pushed boundaries and redefined dance through the way they used the tutu. Their tutus, often made with delicate lace and even layers of gauze, made dancing with intricate, swirling movements a beautiful reality.
And it wasn’t all about length, darlings. It was also about shape. The tutus started moving away from that circular, bell shape and embraced different forms. There was the "Paganini" style tutu, shorter and more flowing, and then the tutu “à la Camargo", a bit more elaborate with additional fabric tiers, and so on. The evolving designs reflected the evolving ballet repertoire, moving from romantic narratives to explorations of the human form and character. It was a time of immense creative ferment!
Act Three: A Symphony of Colors
Today, when we talk about ballet, we don't just think about a graceful dance, we also imagine tutus – graceful, delicate and with those flowing lines that create a dreamy aesthetic. But back in the 1800s, the tutu wasn’t as bright and whimsical. It was mostly about the fabric and the silhouette.
And that's why my heart leaps with joy at the evolution of the tutu’s colour palette! The late 19th century ushered in a whole new world of colour and expression. Think of the brilliant pinks, deep blues, and the most enchanting shades of greens. These vibrant colors were meant to evoke emotion, bringing a unique beauty to every performance. Can you imagine a "La Sylphide" tutu in shimmering silver or a "Giselle" tutu in a deep midnight blue? Isn’t it breathtaking?
Act Four: Modernity and the tutu’s Everlasting Appeal
And now, fast forward to the present, where the ballet tutu, even in its more contemporary iterations, still carries that same spirit of artistry, freedom and innovation that has characterized its journey through time. Today, we see diverse interpretations and innovations. From the tutu as a fashion statement to tutus designed with cutting-edge fabrics and silhouettes, this little garment continues to inspire. There are contemporary choreographers using tutus to push boundaries and tell unique stories, using the tutu as an important element in their artistic expression.
But whatever the style, whatever the colour, there is one constant: the tutu embodies the essence of ballet - a sense of lightness, grace and storytelling that captivates hearts and ignites imaginations around the world.
The tutu's history is fascinating, but let’s not forget what makes this delicate garment so enchanting: the dancers themselves. I admire the ballerinas of the past and those dancing in the present day – they are masters of artistry, beauty, and strength, making every movement a stunning visual spectacle. The way they command the stage, how they use the tutu to convey emotion – it's pure magic.
And don’t forget, dear readers, it's never too late to find the ballet dancer within you. Whether you’re twirling around your living room in a vibrant pink tutu, or dancing with friends at a ballet class, the most important thing is to find joy in movement. And if you’re in need of a dose of balletic inspiration, be sure to pop down to your local ballet theatre! Trust me, it'll be an enchanting experience!
Now, until next Tuesday, stay glamorous, my lovelies. And remember, every day can be #TutuTuesday if you set your mind to it.
Happy twirling!
Lots of love,
Emma xx
[Post note added later, after time travelling back from 2013, a note for the 2023 readership.]
2023 Post Note:
Dear reader! I just came back from 2013, full of that lovely vintage spirit, and with more gorgeous tutus than I could ever imagine! But let's be honest, that vintage style doesn’t have the variety and playful confidence of the tutus we can wear today. I mean, it’s time we take full advantage of this tutu renaissance we’re living in now!
What started as a dancer’s costume, has become a global fashion icon – and it’s so liberating! Let's all take inspiration from that daring spirit of the early tutu pioneers and twirl our way into the future with colour and grace! Because it’s 2023, and you can wear your tutu as a fashion statement for every occasion! You go, you stylish little ballerina you!
Let’s all work together to get more people wearing pink tutus, all around the world! I can’t wait to see what the next decade holds for the beautiful world of tutus and dancing.
Love, Emma
