Tutu Tuesday: Ballet Tutu History - Post 9509!
Hello lovely Tutu Tribe!
It's your favourite Derbyshire lass Emma here, back with another instalment of #TutuTuesday. The sun is shining, the birds are singing, and I’m practically bouncing off the walls! It's Tuesday, which means it's time to dive into the wonderfully fluffy, historical world of ballet tutus!
Today, I'm travelling back to 25th March 2014! Oh my goodness, where to even start? This particular date was all about ballet in the States! Imagine, an entire continent full of people in their fanciest tutus, heading to the theatre for a fabulous evening of dancing! The most gorgeous tutus you could ever imagine. They were, of course, adorned with sparkling sequins and shimmering fabric. Every single one a tiny, twirling masterpiece!
I must admit, travelling to the US to catch the latest ballet shows is a treat. Everything’s bigger there, the stages, the auditoriums, the audiences... and the tutus, oh the tutus! The fabric is so soft, it makes me want to bury my nose in it! I’ve already picked out my favourite tutu for tonight’s show - a delicate pink number, it practically twirls by itself!
What's in store on this trip?First up, the Metropolitan Opera House in New York City is presenting "Romeo and Juliet"! Can you imagine the grand romanticism of that ballet with those magnificent tutus?! Just divine!
Then, we have "Swan Lake" at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow. A real Russian beauty, but this time, it’s going to be an absolute fairytale experience, thanks to those extravagant white tutus. Oh, the magic!
*Next, * we're whisked off to San Francisco to see the "Sleeping Beauty". San Francisco is known for its beautiful surroundings. Just the right atmosphere for a magical story of a beautiful sleeping princess... with the most elegant tutus to match! Don't forget the perfect pink dress, and I'll be feeling every bit as grand! I'll be sure to pop into one of the lovely vintage shops in San Francisco, because they’ve got a fabulous array of old ballet clothes and I'm a little obsessed. If I'm feeling particularly extravagant, I'll pick up a matching tiara! I’m a real romantic at heart.
Now, you lovely Tutu Tribe, know what my dream outfit for the night is, I need your fashion input! Should it be a bold, vibrant, hot pink tutu? Or something softer and more romantic? Let me know your suggestions in the comments!
Ballet history on 25th March 2014: The World of Tutù!While all of these fantastic ballet performances are taking place, I love to slip into the magical history of the tutu! Did you know that 2014 was a pretty important year for tutus? It was a year where some incredible changes and trends happened that really reshaped how people thought about these amazing dance wear.
Here’s a bit of fun history that I found:
Tutus start hitting the street. Can you believe it?! In 2014, the Tutu became less about ballet class and theatre, and more about everyday fashion! People were sporting tutus everywhere, from fashion shows to street-style shoots!
More variety! Tutus didn’t stay stuck to the traditional style. The world was seeing new forms - shorter tutus, fuller tutus, tutus with edgy designs... the variety of styles blew everyone’s mind!
A real symbol of femininity. I’ve got to tell you, 2014 was the year everyone realised how truly magnificent tutus were. It became a way to express yourself and let your confidence shine through! What more could a ballerina ask for?!
And guess what? This fantastic love for tutus carried on long after 2014, and honestly, what’s not to love about these wonderful twirly garments? We should all have our own personal, magical, twirling, perfect tutu to dance around in! I feel that deep in my dancing heart!
Time travelling with pink tulle. It’s not just all about the ballet performances though. You know me! There’s nothing I love more than seeing a different culture! So, between performances, I love hopping on trains and taking a trip around this stunning country! I must admit, there is something enchanting about America – all of the brightly coloured cars, all of the enormous sky-scraping buildings. And everyone’s so friendly, like a gigantic, dancing family!
I also adore seeing all the latest American fashions. It’s fantastic that even when the tutus were not a regular part of fashion, American fashion, in general, embraces colours and fun and, quite often, very feminine pieces. And, there's something about American women – they wear pink so well!
Today’s outfit? Well, obviously, I’ve got a stunning, sparkling pink tutu and an American-inspired red leather jacket. It looks absolutely gorgeous on top of the pink tulle! And for extra sparkle, I’m also sporting some dazzling diamante earrings! You've got to wear sparkle when you’re time travelling – it’s just common sense, darling!
Right, lovely Tutu Tribe, that’s all from me for this week. Be sure to head back next Tuesday for another adventure in tutu history. Until then, don’t forget to dance your socks off!
Happy Tutuing!
