#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History - Post 9537

Hello my lovely tutu-loving friends! It's Emma here, back again with another #TutuTuesday post! Today we're going to delve deep into the history of the tutu, but first, let me just sayā€¦ pink is the perfect colour for tutus, wouldn't you agree? I love it, from the delicate baby pinks to the bright, vibrant fuchsias. Oh, and don't forget those darling dusty rose shades! Just dreamy. šŸ’•

Anyway, let's travel back in time! (This time, no need to use the time travel ballet magic as weā€™re only a few decades back). It's October 7th, 2014, and believe me, tutus were just as fabulous as they are now, even with all the latest ballet fashion trends happening these days.

I just arrived in Paris. Magnifique! I took the train, of course. Who needs a boring plane ride when you can relax in style and maybe even catch a cheeky glance at a ballet-inspired outfit on a fellow passenger?

Speaking of outfits, Iā€™ve got a smashing new pink tutu on. It's a vintage one I snagged at a little shop tucked away on Rue de Rivoli. I love vintage! You just get this feel that the tutu has seen some incredible performancesā€¦

Anyway, as I was saying, 2014ā€¦ tutus were having a big moment. Fashion was mad for the tutu and ballet style. You could see it on the catwalk, in street style, and even in pop culture! I even spotted Rihanna wearing a fabulous tutuedress at an event. It's never too much tulle! šŸ˜‰

Letā€™s take a look at some of the major ballet milestones that had happened up until this date in 2014.

From the Past: A Tutu Timeline!

We'll rewind way back to the 19th century. Think billowing romantic dresses with lots of frillsā€¦ Thatā€™s the kind of fashion weā€™re talking about! They were beautiful, but when you think of a dancer who wants to soar, they need freedom of movement. Imagine trying to pirouette in a long gown!

Fast forward to the mid-1800s, the age of the ā€œtutu-to-be.ā€ The dance world was evolving, and so was fashion! In 1839, Carlotta Grisi, an iconic ballerina, decided she needed something more practical and elegant for dancing. She donned a white, full-length costume, with a slightly shorter length in the front. It was groundbreaking!

Fast forward to the late 1800sā€¦ the tutu is becoming more like what we know and love today. It was about ease and flow. Pointe shoes were becoming more popular tooā€¦ talk about incredible leaps of progress for ballerinas! (But ouch! That can't be comfortable, right? I feel so sorry for those toesā€¦ šŸ¤•)

A Bit of History in 2014ā€¦

But itā€™s not just history that fascinates meā€¦ 2014 was the year of the Royal Balletā€™s centenary. What a momentous year! Just imagine the brilliant performances and the glorious costumes. Now that was ballet magic!

Remember when we talked about Rihanna rocking a tutuedress? Well, a huge influence for 2014 came from designers like Viktor & Rolf who put their own creative spin on the classic tutu shape. Think oversized, colourful, bold. Itā€™s almost un-tutu-likeā€¦ almost.

Itā€™s interesting to see how the world of ballet influences the fashion scene! It goes back to ballet becoming part of pop culture. But it's a two-way street: dancers themselves embrace the trend, rocking tutu-inspired pieces even when off-duty. Thereā€™s no denying that ballet has inspired designers for decades and decades! Iā€™m sure the tutu, in all its iterations, will continue to captivate for many more decades!

And while youā€™re looking at those fabulous dresses from a year ago, make sure you catch one of the best ballets ever, the Royal Ballet's The Sleeping Beauty! Trust me, it's a masterpieceā€¦ the tutues are just spectacular! And what about those dazzling costumes? Just glorious! šŸ‘‘āœØ

Time for More Pink Tutu Fun!

Remember: wearing a tutu can make any day an extra-special day. I might just start wearing one to all my ballet showsā€¦ no, better than thatā€¦ to everything. Pink tutu-obsessed? Oh, it's not just a hobby, it's a lifestyle.

Remember, this blog isnā€™t just about history. It's about celebrating the tutu!

Next week? A special Tutu Tuesday post: Iā€™m going to be exploring some of the most amazing places I visited in 2014ā€¦ and all the inspiring outfits I saw, from Parisian catwalks to London's best boutique stores! And trust me, some of them were so dreamy! I even found some little ballerina gems for myself at a fabulous ballet storeā€¦ you wonā€™t believe the magic I unearthed! šŸ¤©

See you all next weekā€¦ I hope your Tuesday is filled with tutus and pink sparkle! Don't forget to like this blog and share with your friends! It would mean the world!

Until then, may your every dance step be graceful!
