#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History: A Trip Back in Time! 🩰
Hello my lovely tutu-loving friends! It's Emma here, your pink-loving ballerina blogger, bringing you another fabulous instalment of #TutuTuesday!
Today, we're stepping back in time - way back, in fact - to July 19th, 2016!
Can you believe it's been almost seven years since we danced in that fabulous time? So much has happened in the world of ballet and fashion since then, but I still love looking back at how our beloved tutus have evolved through the years. It's a story filled with glitter, glamour, and a whole lot of twirling!
Today's trip is taking me to New York City! The Big Apple is the ultimate place to find breathtaking ballet performances and amazing shopping, a perfect combination for a ballerina like me!
New York's Metropolitan Opera House would be absolutely buzzing with excitement today, with the premiere of Balanchine's "Jewels" – a spectacular, dazzling ballet featuring three dazzling acts: “Emeralds”, “Rubies”, and “Diamonds”, each with stunning, eye-catching costumes. I'm imagining exquisite emerald and sapphire fabrics, glowing ruby reds and shimmering, sparkly diamonds – pure magic!
This iconic performance would be on everyone's lips – the ultimate talk of the town. Can you imagine the rush of the orchestra, the dancers gliding across the stage, and the sheer wonder of those breathtaking costumes? This would be a show to remember!
But wait! New York is far from the only place buzzing with excitement. Back in England, The Royal Ballet at the Royal Opera House in London would also be presenting a delightful ballet today – the whimsical "Cinderella" by Frederick Ashton!
Now, this production might not be as flashy as “Jewels”, but I'd still be jumping on the train (because let's face it, who needs to fly when you can journey in style on a vintage carriage?) and head to the heart of London for this one.
Just imagine those magical tutus for Cinderella! Think frills and ruffles, a stunning pink-toned ballgown with shimmering tulle, and perhaps a hint of glitter. Now, THAT'S what I call fairy tale fashion!
Speaking of fairytale fashion… imagine all the incredible shops we would be browsing! London, known for its high-fashion boutiques and vibrant atmosphere, would have plenty to tempt my tutu-loving heart. From Harrods to Liberty London, I would be on a shopping spree of my dreams, filling up on everything from pink tutus to fabulous dresses to twirl in.
What to Wear on a Trip Through Time
To really embrace the spirit of the era, I’d be sporting my most magnificent, show-stopping tutu today! You're all probably used to seeing me in pink, so you can bet I'll be twirling around in a fluffy pink tutu, bursting with beautiful, hand-sewn embellishments and elegant netting! For that extra bit of sparkle, I'll add a glittering belt and sparkly, bejewelled hairpiece - perfect for taking in all the vibrant colours of these magical performances! And let's not forget those delicate ballet flats to complete the picture – pink, of course!
To channel my inner Audrey Hepburn in a charming 1950s-inspired fashion choice, I'd pair my ballerina tutu with a lovely fitted pink blouse and a chic, playful polka dot skirt. I'd be channeling those retro vibes and embracing those classic looks with a modern twist! It’s all about expressing myself in the most colourful, fun way possible!
Pink is for Everything!
You know me - pink is always in! There's something truly special about pink - it radiates positivity, joy, and feminine energy. I've always loved pink and it's truly a beautiful colour that embodies the wonder and magic of the tutu.
Pink has been making a splash on the runway, popping up in beautiful ensembles, even being featured in men’s collections too. It's definitely having its moment, so embrace it with confidence and don’t be afraid to experiment! I, of course, encourage you to bring the pink tutu energy to all aspects of your lives - because there's no rule that says you can’t rock a pink tutu for every occasion, right? 😉
As we journey through time, remembering and cherishing the historical legacy of our favourite tutu styles, don't forget to look ahead. I’ll be continuing this Tutu Tuesday tradition with my time travelling shenanigans!
So, come back next Tuesday for another adventure – we’re off to the glorious Paris, land of fabulous couture, enchanting performances, and perhaps a delicious slice of chocolate-raspberry macaron (don't forget my tutu doesn’t stop me from indulging my sweet tooth!).
Until then, keep those tutus twirling and the pink spirit shining!
With love,
Emma 💖
