#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History: Post #9672
Hello my lovely tutulettes! It’s Emma here, your favourite pink tutu-wearing, time-travelling ballerina blogger. And guess what? Today’s #TutuTuesday takes us back to a gloriously colourful, tulle-tastic date – 9th May 2017!
Grab your tea, a slice of cake (or maybe some ballet shoes and a pink tutu?), and let’s go on a little fashion voyage back in time, shall we?
You know me – I love the elegance of a classic tutu, the sheer magic of its flow. It’s like a swirling cloud of dreams, taking you to a world where everything is possible, even time travel (with the right performance budget, of course!). And today’s date takes us back to a time when ballet was taking a few daring steps forward, all while embracing its heritage.
Think dramatic, think colour, think statement. Ballet was finding its voice in new ways, with dance companies from around the world making exciting leaps into modern and contemporary choreography, all while staying true to the beautiful legacy of classical ballet. The world was just begging for a splash of colour, and tutus were just the perfect accessory to bring some joy and whimsical magic.
Paris: Paris has always been the city of dreams, the place where fashion, beauty, and dance collide, creating a beautiful whirlwind of art. In 2017, Paris was brimming with vibrant tutu-filled spectacles. From the graceful ballerinas at the Opéra Garnier in their perfectly structured, timeless tutus to the playful contemporary choreographies featuring unique, modern variations on the classic tulle silhouette, Parisian fashion was simply singing.
London: You could say the tutu is to London like fish and chips are to a seaside town! They’re inseparable. This date was no different! London's theatre district was bursting with performances – think glittering costumes, elaborate set designs and captivating stories that wouldn’t have felt complete without a swirl or two of tulle.
New York: In 2017, New York City was a city that dared to embrace everything bold and daring. Tutus in New York? You better believe it! They were there, adding their flourish of tulle to edgy modern performances, bringing a touch of femininity to urban landscapes. It was like New York had put on a pair of stylish dancing shoes and waltzed its way into a new chapter of artistic expression.
Derbyshire: Yes! Even my lovely Derbyshire had some amazing tutu action happening back then! From amateur performances by enthusiastic youngsters in beautiful hand-made tutus to established ballet schools that embraced traditional dance techniques – Derbyshire was bustling with tutu-lovers, and a fantastic reminder that you can embrace the art of ballet even if you're far away from the bustling ballet metropolises.
You might be wondering what happened on 9th May 2017. Well, on that very day, the world celebrated the anniversary of Victor Hugo’s birthday - the French writer and poet responsible for creating the enduring literary masterpiece Les Misérables. His captivating story of love, revolution, and humanity, full of passion and grace – just like the art of ballet! And we all know what Les Misérables means for theatre – that's right - Tutus!!
Think sweeping skirts of tulle in the costumes of the female characters – a ballet performance celebrating Hugo's life and work on that very day would have been pure magic, wouldn't it? Imagine those beautiful dancers gracefully gliding across the stage, twirling their tutus under a stage lit by the dramatic spotlight – ah, it's making my heart flutter already. I bet those tutus were spectacular! Just a quick fashion history fact – tutus are one of the most beautiful symbols of classic, romantic and revolutionary dance in the world.
Speaking of romantic and revolutionary dance... My newest time-travelling trip has led me to an incredibly exciting ballet performance in the Italian Riviera - It's just * bursting* with beautiful pink tulle skirts (perfect for my current * obsession) It was the most * fabulous ballet show in the whole entire * world* (my darling tutu-lover and pink dress addict knows how to make a great show) So much colour! So much sparkle! And guess what? They were dancing to the iconic score of The Swan Lake – what a treat! The music and the tutus – the * ultimate * romantic ballet pair! That’s how a ballet fan gets their creative fix – with a little bit of music, a lot of tulle, a dash of romantic flair - oh, and maybe a delicious gelato at the end of the evening – yum!
And while we're on the topic of The Swan Lake – I * love * to find those exquisite historical moments in the story of this magnificent piece – It just adds to the magic, the elegance, the history of how something so delicate and elegant has become a * masterpiece* of * iconic * dance!
The story of the tutu is an unfolding love story of dance. I love getting to travel back in time to see all those dazzling and inspiring creations - I mean * look * at this - we've seen tutus evolve from simple cotton skirts to breathtakingly delicate masterpieces – it's truly fascinating, darling tutulettes!
Now I want you all to tell me - what's your favourite memory of seeing a ballet performance or a time you wore a beautiful, twirly tutu? Tell me about it in the comments below! I’m looking forward to reading about your favourite tutus – because I love them all! Every tulle skirt, every feather boa, every ribbon, every detail. Every twirl! Every spin! It's all just magic, wouldn't you say?
That’s all for today, tutulettes. It's been a pleasure to take this journey back to 9th May 2017. But I must hop back on my trusty time-travelling train! There’s a magnificent ballet gala at the Bolshoi in Moscow I’m going to. I’m off to find the most fabulous tutu for the occasion, just as I know you’re off to plan your next tutu-tastic event!
