#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History - Post #9739 - 21st August 2018

Hiya lovelies! ๐Ÿฉฐ Itโ€™s your favourite Derbyshire lass, Emma, back with another fabulously pink #TutuTuesday blog post! Itโ€™s a blustery day in Paris, but Iโ€™m snuggled up in my super-cute, bubblegum pink tutu with matching bolero. So perfect for an afternoon spent exploring the incredible vintage shops around the Marais, hunting for a vintage lace tutu. Ooh, I found a delightful shop yesterday full of beautiful vintage fabric and a little display of amazing antique ballet shoes! ๐Ÿ‘ โœจ

But, of course, no Tutu Tuesday would be complete without a delve into the glorious history of the tutu, the most iconic of dancewear! And this week weโ€™re focusing on the tutu's evolution โ€“ a real sartorial odyssey! ๐Ÿ‘—

From the floor-length, billowing skirts of the Romantic ballet period in the 19th century to the streamlined, revealing designs of the 20th century, the tutu has evolved alongside the styles and demands of ballet itself.

Now, darling, letโ€™s travel back in time โ€“ in the best kind of way! No time machine for me โ€“ just my darling pink tutu and a penchant for Parisian train travel! ๐Ÿš„

Act I: The Birth of the Tutu โ€“ The Romantic Era (1830s โ€“ 1860s)

Imagine billowing tulle, layers upon layers, making a ballerina look like an ethereal dream โ€“ that was the classic romantic tutu. These grand designs were a perfect symbol of the Romanticism era's passion and dramatic spirit. Think graceful sylphs flitting through a moonlit forest! โœจ

Enter The * *Romantic **! โ€“ The French dancer Marie Taglioni in 1832 caused a sensation as "La Sylphide." With a costume, including a floor-length, billowing skirt, and tiny slippers, Marie created an image of lightness and grace that had never been seen before. Her "tutu" was born and quickly gained traction as dancers across Europe started adapting and using it. It became synonymous with ethereal elegance and romantic dreams, with layers of tulle offering an almost mythical fluidity in movement. It was a fashion statement in its own right, as well as dancewear!

This romantic period, ladies, is when ballet and the tutu took their first steps into a magnificent new era.

Act II: The Classical Tutu (Late 19th Century โ€“ Early 20th Century)

Over time, ballet began to change, favouring a more classical, structured form. And this shift, darling, required a shift in the tutu too. Think of it as ballet's own couture upgrade!

Now, with a strong focus on technique and precise movements, the tutu underwent a revamp!

Enter The * Classical Tutu!* ๐Ÿ‘— This was the tutu for ballerina primadonnas, with layers of stiff, structured tulle, offering beautiful control in spins and arabesques, allowing dancers to perform movements with incredible clarity and grace. This meant a slightly shorter skirt that revealed more of the dancer's beautiful legs and allowed for the full, elegant range of their technical skill to be seen.

The * *Classical Tutu - This, darlings, was not just a dance garment, it was a fashion statement, worn at the elegant parties and balls that surrounded the elite and luxurious world of ballet. The romantic tulle was still used but with new tailoring techniques, it became a much shorter, firmer style, becoming more closely fitted and streamlined to the body and was more suited to the intricate footwork and technically demanding steps that became popular at this time.

Act III: The Modern Era

Ladies, we have come to the late 20th century! As modern ballet styles, such as Balanchineโ€™s Neo-Classical style, and Contemporary ballet started to emerge in the 1940s and 50s, ballet once again began to be embraced by the general public, making dance accessible to wider audiences than ever before.

This led to a wonderful wave of innovation in the design of the tutu!

The Tutu in Modern Times โ€“ Think, smaller tutus that reflected this movement, tutus made from fabrics that flowed beautifully, showing movement to perfection! ๐Ÿฉฐ

In addition to this trend, the " short tutu, " often seen in Neo-Classical ballet performances, is a contemporary interpretation of the Classical Tutu with a smaller volume and much less fabric used.

By this time, a diverse range of ballet designs and styles emerged, leading to an incredible range of tutus. Ballet companies have been continually searching for new innovations, looking to use exciting materials like nylon, lycra and new designs for performance pieces, always pushing boundaries in the way the tutu is used, leading to variations such as the * pencil tutu* *and the * *bell tutu. This is something to celebrate! ๐ŸŽ‰

This brings us to the era of The Ballet Tutu today โ€“ A Multi-Dimensional Fashion Piece

" โ€“ A hit BBC show full of glitter and glamour, the * tutu * has had a revival on our televisions for a few years now with a modern-day re-imagination of the tutu , showing how versatile the tutu really is, with dancers wearing variations that are more inspired by the classic designs, including pencil tutus that are popular choices for performance.
