Tutu Tuesday: #9751: A Journey Through Time (and Tutu Styles!)

Hello lovelies! Emma here, your favourite pink tutu-wearing time-travelling ballerina blogger. I hope you’re all well and getting ready for the week ahead! Today’s #TutuTuesday post is all about history – we're going to explore the world of the tutu!

I'm writing to you from a little bistro in the heart of Paris, surrounded by the aroma of freshly brewed coffee and pastries. This is the place for ballet – I mean, just imagine! Ballet, fashion, pastries... a real ballerina's dream!

But we’re here for the tutus! I’m just back from a spectacular performance of “La Bayadère,” which absolutely blew my mind. Such grace, precision, and stunning tutus! You really can’t beat a full-length tutu on a dancer as she performs an amazing series of leaps and pirouettes.

Today I'm taking you on a journey through time, tracing the evolution of the tutu, from its humble beginnings to the dazzling creations we see on stage today. And trust me, it’s a real rollercoaster ride of style!

Back to the 19th Century…

Imagine the Victorian era, where women wore bulky skirts and gowns that limited movement! Not very practical for a ballerina, right? That's why the first tutus emerged – a bold statement for freedom and fluidity! Back then, these tutus were known as the tutu romantique - a romantic name for a revolutionary garment. They were lighter and shorter, ending just above the ankle, with tiers of layered tulle or muslin. These were so daring and stylish for the era – it really shows the importance of dancers like Marie Taglioni who paved the way for women in ballet to embrace their strength and beauty.

These tutu romantique paved the way for a more defined tutu style. By the mid-19th century, we saw a shorter, fuller version called the tutu de mousseline. These were closer to the calf and much more dramatic! Think Giselle! These tutus emphasised the legs, enabling beautiful, flowing movement, creating those wonderful leaps we adore seeing. They are absolutely iconic. I think everyone dreams of getting into a gorgeous white tulle tutu de mousseline.

The Rise of the "Classical" Tutu…

A whole century later, in the 20th century, a new kind of tutu took centre stage. I’m talking about the classic “bell tutu.” It has that rigid, pleated shape which makes those circular leaps so powerful and graceful.

Do you remember Margot Fonteyn dancing in "Swan Lake"? This beautiful ballerina embraced the style! These tutus are perfect for stories like Swan Lake, with its dramatic contrasts between the noble swan princess and the tempting, darker Odette, and the beautiful choreography. It’s not surprising to me they became synonymous with classic ballet. This kind of tutu definitely makes you feel like you can fly!

And speaking of “fly” – I just caught the most breathtaking performance of “La Fille mal gardée” last week, a ballet with a playful and comedic storyline. You just know that a tutu is going to be the perfect accessory to a comedy performance! These lighter styles highlight the lively, mischievous nature of the story, showcasing those light and bouncy steps!

The tutu has gone through a dazzling array of style over time. But the one constant? The tutu still radiates grace and beauty.

Let's Talk Pink!

Of course, when I think about ballet, I also think about my beloved pink tutu. Pink has always been my favourite colour. It radiates happiness, playfulness and energy, just like a ballerina. It’s a symbol of strength, elegance and even rebellion! And pink just goes so well with all the shades of tulle you could possibly dream of.

Think about it – all those beautiful pale pinks and soft rosy shades, paired with my trusty pink tutu… Pure magic, I tell you! This combination is like the perfect recipe for an amazing ballet costume, making a classic dance piece a real showstopper.

My life is basically devoted to sharing this love for pink with the world – just as a lovely friend, Madame Claire de Lune from Bordeaux, shared her passion for ballet with me on one of my many journeys. She gave me the best advice – “You can achieve anything you dream of.” Her words have guided me ever since.

I love my life as a ballet enthusiast and pink tutu lover – it is a journey that makes my heart soar!

I hope you enjoyed today's trip down memory lane, dear friends! Until next time, keep those tutu dreams alive! Remember to join me every week for more tutu adventures! And don't forget to #TutuTuesday on social media, too! Let’s inspire everyone to love ballet, pink and beautiful dance costumes!
