Hello my darling tutu enthusiasts! It's Emma here, your favourite pink tutu-wearing time traveller, and welcome back to my weekly dose of tutu history! It's a gloriously sunny Tuesday here in the heart of London, where the smell of fresh flowers and the sound of street performers mingle in the air, making it the perfect day for a twirl!
This week, my trusty time machine has taken me back to the 10th of September 2019 – just a few short years ago, can you believe it? Let's jump in and explore the fascinating world of tutus during this exciting period!
The Parisian Dream:
2019 was a year full of delightful fashion and cultural events. In Paris, the heart of ballet and high fashion, I was mesmerised by the beautiful Spring/Summer collections of Chanel, Dior, and Givenchy, all brimming with hints of ballerina inspiration – think flowing silks, delicate tulle, and hints of lace, a truly romantic blend for a tutu-loving soul!
Tutu-ing around the World:
During my travels this year, I’ve had the honour of experiencing ballet performances from across the globe, from the enchanting Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow to the iconic New York City Ballet. I've been awestruck by the stories told through each graceful movement, the incredible technical abilities of the dancers, and the breathtaking beauty of the costumes, especially those dazzling tutus!
Speaking of costumes, the American Ballet Theatre had their Annual Gala this week in New York. I’m dying to see what those costumes were like! The gala, held in a historic theatre built in the early 1900s, was full of opulent glamour and incredible performances. It's amazing how these grand venues have witnessed so many extraordinary tutu moments throughout history!
Tutu Trends:
Fashion trends, they come and go, but tutus are a timeless classic! In 2019, the trend was towards whimsical and ethereal tutus. You couldn't escape the presence of soft tulle, layered fabrics, and even sparkly embellishments, turning tutus into everyday fashion statements! The sheer amount of choices was absolutely delightful. From delicate lace and pastel shades for the romantic at heart to bold colours and dramatic shapes for those who prefer a statement-making look, 2019 truly embraced the versatility of tutus!
Taking It To the Streets:
Ballet street is blossoming and I've been inspired by seeing more and more people embracing the beauty of dance beyond the confines of the theatre. From vibrant street performances in cities like Berlin and Tokyo, to countless videos on social media featuring the latest tutu dance trends, ballet is more accessible and inspiring than ever before! It's truly heartening to see everyone embracing this incredible art form in their own unique ways.
Sharing My Love for Pink:
As you all know, my ultimate mission in life is to get everyone to wear a pink tutu. And let me tell you, my heart swelled with joy this year at the sight of countless women confidently embracing the power of a pink tutu – from elegant pink gowns at red-carpet events, to the soft blush of tulle worn by fashion-forward bloggers. I even saw a cute group of friends wear pink tutus at a birthday party in London!
What About Today?
So here we are, on September 10th, 2019. It's the perfect day to don a pink tutu and embrace your inner ballerina. You never know what adventures await when you take a leap of faith and twirl into a day filled with sunshine, happiness, and the beautiful ballet of life!

Today, you can head down to The Royal Opera House in London, home to the world-renowned Royal Ballet, to immerse yourself in the magic of ballet! Be sure to visit their charming gift shop, which often features delightful ballet-inspired souvenirs, including tutus of course!
