#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History: A Trip Through Time!
Hello darling tutu lovers!
It's me, Emma, your favourite pink tutu wearing time traveller, back again with another delightful dose of ballet tutu history. Itās a beautiful Tuesday, and the sun is shining on London! Iām off to the Royal Opera House tonight to see āSleeping Beautyā ā such a beautiful ballet.
Letās dive into history, shall we? This week, we're whisking back to 3rd March 2020. A few days earlier, the world had been abuzz with news of the Olympics in Tokyo, which were due to begin on July 24th! Now, I know you're thinking - Tutus and the Olympics? What connection? Well, imagine this: picture Olympic ice skating, elegant and graceful, all swirling around the ice, andā¦ tutus! That's right! The outfits often look like tutus, especially with those lovely sparkles. This year, the athletes in Tokyo were aiming to inspire a generation of skaters andā¦ pink tutu wearing time travelers?! Perhaps.
But back to 2020ā¦ In London that week, it was the annual London Fashion Week, always an exciting affair with vibrant colours and breathtaking styles. Itās always so inspiring to see how designers incorporate ballet into their creations ā flowing silhouettes, delicate fabricsā¦ it's a beautiful match, and who could resist a touch of tutu magic in our wardrobes?
And of course, it was ballet season, my absolute favourite! Every single Tuesday in March found me twirling and pirouetting across a stage in my sparkly pink tutu! What a delightful way to celebrate tutu history, donāt you think? It was truly the time to sparkle!
Now, onto the real meat of the matter, our tutus! In March 2020, there were so many tutus in circulation, it's hard to pick just one. But one thing stood out that month - a resurgence of vintage ballet tutus! This classic style captured hearts everywhere. Those sweet little puffs of fabric just bring so much joy and innocence - just perfect for every little girl (and let's face it, all the grown-up girls too! ) to channel their inner ballerina.
Now, letās travel back to the heart of it all - Paris! This bustling city is the heart of all things tutu ā after all, where else would we find such stylish women in elegant pink tutus on the cobblestones? The designers here understood the magical effect of tutus, even on the everyday streets.
Speaking of Parisian magicā¦ in 2020, Paris hosted a spectacular āBallet under the Starsā event. The open-air ballet performances featured stunning, luminous tutus against a starry night sky! You canāt beat the romantic feel of the French capital when you mix it with twirling and dancing!
And then there were the musicals... Who could forget the West End and the dazzling, show-stopping, pink tutu wearing women who took to the stage, gracing the likes of the West End theatres in spectacular fashion? We all love a bit of drama, glamour, and sparkles!
But don't forget about ballet on the screen! A brand new adaptation of āThe Nutcrackerā hit theaters. This beloved holiday classic - with all its lovely tutus! - brought families together with beautiful stories and, of course, those timeless ballet moments. Who needs a Christmas present when you have a dazzling tutued Nutcracker ballet in your living room?!
Speaking of family funā¦ My darling little sister Alice and I have always shared a love of tutus and ballet! So, for her 16th birthday we visited Madame Tussaudās Wax Museum. This year it featured a special exhibit of tutus from the history of dance. Imagine it, Alice wearing a pink tutu and standing side by side with the wax tutu-clad figures ā the stuff of little girl dreams!
Of course, our journey wouldn't be complete without mentioning The Royal Ballet. They put on stunning performances that just stole your breath away, all those elegant pirouettes and breathtaking swansā¦ And of course, their stunning pink tutus always looked so perfect, so elegantā¦ oh the perfection of those gorgeous ballerinas, in all their pink tutu glory!
Now, dear readers, donāt be a āsquare,ā come on, live a little! Join the movement! Put on your favourite tutu ā any color will do, pink or not! And letās go twirl and twirl! Because, really, who needs an excuse to put on a pink tutu? And if you're in the area, maybe Iāll see you at the next Royal Opera House ballet show! And I hope to see more beautiful ballet pictures on #TutuTuesday !
*Remember to keep your eyes peeled for the latest posts on www.pink-tutu.com, I'm off to write the next edition in my series about the history of the ballerina, and how their stunning tutus have made history for over a century nowā¦ I love this time-travel life! I hope you love reading my little blogā¦ *
Love,
Emma, the Tutu Traveller!
