Greetings, dear fellow tutu enthusiasts! Itās your favourite pink-tutu-wearing blogger, Emma, here, back with another exciting instalment in my #TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History series! Today we're travelling toā¦ wait for itā¦ August 11th, 2020! Oh, the thrill of time travel! I have my trusty pink tutu and a little suitcase full of sparkly headbands ready for our sartorial adventure.
Before we dive into the fascinating world of tutus from this time, donāt forget to grab a cuppa (or a glass of champagne if youāre feeling fancy!), find a comfy spot, and get ready for a fabulous journey through time! 2020! What a whirlwind of a year it was! (Seriously, does everyone remember when the world went a little bit crazy? I wonāt even delve into that nowā¦ the tutu chronicles are always about positivity and twirling!) Anyway, for August 11th, 2020, my trusty time machine brought me toā¦ New York! Ah, New York! Such an amazing city for ballet, the arts, fashion! Thereās just so much inspiration everywhere, and letās face it ā any city that hosts a showstopping fashion week is definitely a hot spot for a girl who loves her pink tutu!
Now, back to our journeyā¦ as I sashayed around New York on August 11th, 2020, I noticed the tutu scene was definitely going through a vibrant renaissance! Ballet tutus were all over the place, and people were having so much fun with the classic shape and its many reinterpretations!
First things first: ballet performances. On August 11th, 2020, there was a wealth of spectacular performances in New York! I took a trip to the renowned Lincoln Center, where the New York City Ballet was wowing audiences with its intricate choreographies and dazzling tutu ensembles. They even had a few special āTutu Tuesdaysā running ā now, you canāt tell me thatās not fate!
Oh, the dresses! I even saw some extraordinary contemporary ballet performances at various theatres throughout the city, with dancers sporting some very creative tutus ā imagine tutus fashioned from shimmering sequins, cascading feathers, or even drumroll light-up tulle!
Beyond the stage, New Yorkers were channeling their inner ballerina spirit on the streets too. Now, Iām not talking about literally wearing tutus to workā¦ though, who says you couldnāt? (There was a rather delightful tutu-wearing, ballet-themed pop-up cafe near Central Park. It served adorable little cupcakes!) What I mean is, the city was bursting with the style of the ballerina. From flowing maxi skirts to whimsical lace dresses and flowing gowns, those graceful and feminine lines of the tutu had really made their way into everyday fashion.
My shopping expedition went a little something like this:
- Macyās! That famous department store was my first stop! I went straight for the dancewear section, because you can never have too much pink tulle, darling. There were so many incredible colours and lengths to choose from! And you wonāt believe this: they even had an entire rack dedicated to tutus with tiny fluffy bunnies stitched to them. (They were adorable, but, unfortunately, Iād have looked utterly ridiculous with a pink tutu and fluffy bunny in New York City. Maybe Iāll try them out at Derbyshire's annual Gala.)
- Saks Fifth Avenue was a dream for haute couture tutu inspirations! Imagine flowing, tulle gowns with exquisite beadwork, or skirts made entirely of shimmering feathersā¦ the colours were vibrant, and the shapes were simply divine!
- The iconic Bergdorf Goodman: I spotted a display with incredible tutu-inspired dresses. There was one beautiful, flowing, tiered chiffon gown that, you guessed it, came in pink.
On the street style frontā¦ my dear, dear, New York fashionistas certainly knew how to twirl it! A little tip: the more fluttery the skirt or dress, the more dramatic the swish as you walkā¦ that was the big tip in New York, darling, trust me!
For instance, I spied a trend of pairing statement tutus, and by statement tutus I mean voluminous, extravagant tutu-inspired pieces made of organza, tulle or satin (because honestly, how can a ballerina look fierce without a full tutu, am I right?)ā¦ and pairing them with chunky boots. What I liked was the mix of styles!
Or how about tulle overlays: think chic, elegant dress, with a sheer tulle layer of ruffles cascading down from the waist to the anklesā¦ Oh, the elegance! And I loved how lace featured everywhere - tops, dresses, skirtsā¦ just add a tiny sparkly headbands for extra style. I loved this trend because lace was always elegant.
Letās face it, fashion is always inspired by some aspect of the ballerina. What I found exciting was how the 2020 trend embraced all the styles of tutu: romantic, glamorous, fierceā¦ and still made it effortlessly wearable!
On a more practical sideā¦ (because I do like my pink tutu to have a bit of staying power), the 2020 scene was full of tutu-ready footwear! Imagine elegant, pointy-toe flats, classic ballet pumpsā¦ oh, and a fabulous selection of sleek ballet-inspired boots.
As the sun began to set over the city, my time machine started gently vibrating. Sighs. Farewell to 2020, New York, and the glorious, colourful world of ballet and fashion!
Remember, my lovely tutu fans! If youāre looking to embrace your inner ballerina, a pink tutu (or two) is always a fantastic start! Whether youāre twirling on a stage, walking down a busy street, or having a tea party at home, tutus always make life more joyful and a little more magical!
