#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History - Blog Post No. 9872 - 9th March, 2021!

Hello lovelies! Emma here, your resident pink tutu-wearing time-traveler, bringing you the latest on all things tutu-tastic! Today we’re whisked away to the year 2021, and what a year it is! This year has so many interesting trends that even I need a bit of a refresher, what with all the time-hopping about I’m doing. Anyway, let’s get down to the business of tutus!

I’m currently perched in my little Parisian flat, the scent of freshly baked croissants and blooming mimosa swirling around me. What’s better than Parisian life, you ask? Nothing, darling, nothing. The city simply drips with chic and fashion and we’re in the heart of where the tutu reigns supreme, don’t you think?

Now, for the history part of #TutuTuesday: 2021. Let’s think… What was all the rage? Well, if I’m honest, all I’m really thinking about is what a year for dance this one turned out to be. There was so much brilliant ballet that you could barely fit it all in! This year was truly magical in terms of tutu designs. So many gorgeous variations - the tutu seems to be branching out a lot in 2021! You’ve got your traditional, ultra-romantic tutu’s, of course, then those modern-yet-classic interpretations, but also all those amazing innovative styles. Think 'cloud tutus', ones with dramatic fabric flows that just defy gravity…oh, the joy!

Don't even get me started on all the colours! 2021 really brought the rainbows and every imaginable shade in between! Think neon, think sparkles, think daring combinations of pink with shocking orange and chartreuse...it was a wild ride.

As we were travelling back through the years in my 'time-traveling hot air balloon' - I mean, a girl's gotta travel in style! - I was just musing about some of the other, really big fashion and cultural trends of 2021. There was a real resurgence in interest in retro-chic fashion - everyone’s wearing 90s high-waisted jeans and baggy sweatshirts, think “Clueless" on the school playground - so fun and easy! Then there's the sustainable fashion revolution...I adore this idea - less fast fashion, more quality items that can be cherished and passed down. And as for the internet - it's just gotten bigger and bigger. Think influencers, viral videos, endless streams of fashion trends and, of course, everyone showing off their #tutu looks, just like I do! It’s quite wild to think back on those days…such an exciting time for everyone!

Now, back to the ballet. For those of you who have followed my #TutuTuesday series, you know that for me the absolute highlight of 2021 - and probably the whole decade, tbh! - had to be seeing “Giselle” at the Bolshoi. That was just breath-taking! All the elements came together - a legendary performance in an exquisite space with tutus fit for a dream. You’ve got the classic white tutus and then those fabulous ones with a delicate floral detail - they looked like tiny blooming roses around the dancers' waists. My #tutuGoals, for sure!

Another personal favourite was the Ballet Blanc revival, right here in Paris! There were so many performances showcasing all the exquisite classic tutus you can imagine. It was a true feast for the eyes! Oh, and then there was “The Nutcracker” … Every year there seems to be a new version of it, but this time round they went full “whimsical magic” on the tutus. Some dancers wore sparkly white ones, and then there were others that had glittering silver details that seemed to almost change colour in the theatre lights, with a touch of lilac here and there. That just about killed me! It was so beautifully over-the-top… sigh, pure, sparkly loveliness.

But we're not just focusing on ballet here. No, no. There’s always a little something extra about #TutuTuesday! The 9th of March, 2021, happened to be World Kidney Day. Talk about an amazing day for reminding everyone how much they’re loving their tutus, wouldn't you say? But also - seriously - take care of your health. It’s important to keep ourselves healthy to stay nimble, because I have a feeling there are even more amazing tutus out there just waiting for me to discover!

I did say the internet exploded in 2021, didn't I? It was actually on the 9th of March that the #TutuTuesday hashtag reached a record million posts! Everyone was getting in on the tutu action!

Oh, darling, have I told you what I'm working on lately? As we know, there are never too many tutus! It’s hard work keeping up with my time-travel fashion and keeping up with all those incredible performances! This time I’ve been adding a few twists to my usual style! Think layers, lace, ribbons…lots and lots of pink ribbon! I even found a few beautiful antique ones for a more romantic vintage look - just what the Doctor ordered for a perfect tutu outfit! I am actually quite pleased with myself – my time traveling journey across fashion history continues!

Let’s take a moment to reflect. 2021 – what a year for the tutu!

Love and sparkly twirls,
Emma xoxo
