Tutu Tuesday: A Whirlwind Through Time - Ballet Tutu History - #9883
Hello darlings! It's your favourite pink-tutu-clad time traveller Emma, back with another #TutuTuesday dive into the fascinating history of our beloved ballet tutu.
Today, the calendar flips to 25th May 2021, and let me tell you, the world's looking absolutely radiant. After a rather long train journey through the 20th Century (my fellow time travellers know what I mean!), I’ve just arrived in… drumroll… London! The heart of fashion, theatre, and oh my goodness, did I mention the ballet!
I must confess, London's got my inner-fashionista bubbling. I snagged a deliciously fluffy pink tutu from the most exquisite shop tucked away in Covent Garden, paired with a silk blouse that screams "1950s glamour meets 21st century elegance". Trust me, this combo's sure to turn heads at tonight's performance at the Royal Opera House. Speaking of the Royal Opera House… it’s the place to be for all things ballet, darling! The atmosphere is electric with the anticipation of a brilliant performance. I hear it’s going to be the most spectacular show of the season!
Speaking of spectacular, you won’t believe where my little time machine took me earlier today. It all started with a bit of a whiff of smoke and a slight wobble in time. When the smoke cleared, I was transported straight to the world of ballet's first proper tutus! You see, back in the late 18th century, tutus were nothing like the ethereal wisps we know today. Picture this: layered, bulky, cumbersome… a literal wardrobe malfunction waiting to happen!
Imagine poor Marie Antoinette’s maids desperately trying to hold up these massive skirt creations, not wanting her to get caught in a wardrobe disaster. Poor Marie. Can you picture her, gracefully performing in one of those! Thankfully, that bulky skirt phase didn’t last long! As ballerinas began focusing on fluidity and grace, tutus evolved, becoming more streamlined, flowing and light!
Now let's fast forward to the mid-19th century and Marie Taglioni – the epitome of the graceful, romantic ballet ballerina. This beautiful lady revolutionised ballet. She practically flew across the stage in the soft, airy skirts of the tutu, a dramatic change from those heavy contraptions. You can just imagine her making the audience gasp in awe as she seemed to be suspended in mid-air!
Now fast forward to today, to this 21st century of vibrant, daring and innovative creations. Imagine the flamboyantly beautiful and playful designs, the dazzling fabrics, and the creative experimentation with shapes and forms. It’s all thanks to those visionary designers who decided to push the boundaries of dance and style. You really can feel the impact of the evolution of the tutu throughout history!
My goodness, where does time go? It's almost time to get ready for the show! Can't wait to witness a mesmerizing performance of elegance, artistry and beauty, with all the latest tutu designs swirling on stage!
But before I run off, darling, what are you doing today? I'm dying to know. Will you join me in celebrating a day dedicated to tutus? It's time to get twirling, dipping, and spinning – maybe you'll even consider rocking a pink tutu for the day! Don’t forget, you don’t need to be a dancer to embrace the charm of a tutu!
Until next time, darling! Remember to stay fabulous, wear your favourite tutu with confidence, and don't be afraid to make your own splash on the world, one pink twirl at a time!
**Love,
Emma x**
