Tutu Tuesday: #9890 Ballet Tutu History - 13th July 2021

Hello my darling darlings! Emma here, your very own pink tutu wearing time traveller and resident ballet expert! Welcome to my little corner of the internet where we celebrate the joy and magic of the tutu, and delve into its fascinating history.

As you know, today's the day for a good old fashioned #TutuTuesday and today we're travelling back to the year 2021! This week has been quite the adventure, having danced on stage in a Paris theatre earlier in the week, with a fabulous performance of "Swan Lake," I hopped aboard the Orient Express, arriving here in London just in time for a spot of shopping and then some ballet class this morning at the Royal Opera House. It’s been so exciting to get to experience ballet from the other side of the stage and witness the passion of these brilliant dancers - just wow!

The 13th of July 2021… what was happening on this day? It was a day of excitement and fashion! As always, the big news came from the world of fashion. You wouldn't believe the fabulous pieces that graced the runways for this year’s Couture Week. A dazzling display of colour and extravagance that even a seasoned time traveller like me could only dream of! And talking about dreams, oh darling, there was this beautiful gown, a symphony of silk and lace, that simply had me entranced! But what could compete with the elegance of a tutu, you ask? Nothing, of course!

And speaking of tutus, this brings me to today's subject - let’s dive back in time to the ballet world of July 2021! The Royal Ballet was taking centre stage in London with a phenomenal production of "Romeo and Juliet" - it's the type of show that brings a lump to your throat, darling! And did you know that there was a huge international ballet competition being held in Copenhagen? The Royal Danish Ballet's staging of the famous “La Sylphide” had audiences captivated. You could just feel the excitement and anticipation!

Tutus in 2021, they were all about sophistication and elegance, darlings! Think flowing tulle, delicate beading, and designs that evoked a sense of fairytale whimsy. Remember that iconic, romantic tutu worn by the sugar plum fairy in “The Nutcracker?" Well, let's just say those classic designs continued to enchant in 2021. But I can tell you one thing for certain: the tutu has had quite a journey over the centuries!

Remember our Tutu Tuesday journey so far? You can find all our historical blog posts on www.pink-tutu.com! There’s so much to uncover, from its early beginnings with ballet masters and courtly gatherings to the fabulous, glittering productions that we witness today, it’s a tale of innovation, creativity and the magic of dance!

One of the most intriguing facts about 2021 is the resurgence of the short tutus, darling! Do you remember “La Sylphide” which we mentioned? It was a ballet that first debuted in Paris in 1832! But look at that tutu - short and fluffy! In the early days, tutus were shorter, you know, but as the style developed, tutus became longer and more full, creating those magnificent, billowing skirts that were popular for centuries.

And look! That very style, that short tutu, had its moment of glory once more! With the emphasis being on its whimsical appeal. Remember our short tutu with its delicate tulle skirt that looks like something out of a dream? Well, it’s definitely back and it's taking ballet world by storm! So, my darlings, you can definitely channel your inner sugar plum fairy, because these sweet little skirts are making a big splash!

And just imagine, all those beautiful colours and fabrics – imagine swirling tulle that whispers secrets, elegant lines, and all those intricate details!

That's where the fashion really takes off, because these amazing little masterpieces, our dear tutus, aren't just for the stage - think of how perfectly they work in everyday life. Think about how much fun you can have mixing and matching textures, adding that perfect pop of pink (because of course you must embrace a dash of pink in every look! it's a statement, darling!), and pairing a tutu with a quirky accessory! And oh, you can just take your pick from countless designs. The key, of course, is to have fun with it.

You know, I feel so strongly that every girl (and every boy!) should own at least one tutu! Think of it as an empowerment symbol – because owning a tutu is like owning a ticket to confidence, a touch of magic and a sprinkle of ballerina stardust! Let's be honest, darlings, the world is much better place when everyone is wearing a tutu. Why? Because we all need a bit of that sparkle and joy in our lives.

I'm thinking about how I can get everyone to dress up in their favorite tutus - perhaps I need a bit more time travel - imagine the "Tutu Tuesday” parade with people everywhere rocking those amazing designs! Maybe even an international Tutu Festival? I’d need to work on the logistical details but oh, darling, imagine all those tulle, and feathers, and maybe a giant glitter ball. I bet you a whole box of macarons you wouldn’t want to miss it!

Anyway, I’m dreaming big, because that’s how we change the world - one tutu at a time! It's time to celebrate all things twirly and beautiful. So, darlings, until next Tuesday, go forth and embrace the joy of dance, fashion and, of course, the magic of the tutu! Don't forget to share your beautiful tutu moments on social media, and tag #TutuTuesday so we can share your fantastic photos and spread the tutu love!
