Tutu Tuesday: Ballet Tutu History! (Post #9909)

Hello, my dearest tutu-loving lovelies! Emma here, your resident pink tutu-wearing, time-traveling, ballet enthusiast! Welcome to another Tuesday, and another peek into the fascinating world of the ballet tutu! It's my mission to share the enchanting story of this iconic garment, one fabulous twirl at a time. So grab your fanciest ballet shoes, darling, and let's take a trip through time, shall we?

This week, my adventures landed me in New York City on November 23rd, 2021. Honestly, I don't know where to even begin! It's absolutely bursting with dazzling lights, inspiring culture, and a captivating ballet scene! The very air hums with energy, it's a veritable ballet-lover's paradise. Just picture this: strolling along the glittering Broadway, the iconic lights casting a magical glow, and then suddenly... a flurry of graceful movements, captivating storytelling, and an explosion of emotions as the curtains rise on a captivating performance at the Lincoln Center. Absolutely divine!

And speaking of magical performances, November 23rd just happens to be the anniversary of the American Ballet Theatre’s grand opening of its new home, the stunning David H. Koch Theater at Lincoln Center. I imagine the energy must have been electric. A truly remarkable venue showcasing world-renowned ballet talent! Honestly, darling, it's giving dreams come true.

Now, let's rewind a bit to truly appreciate the remarkable story of the tutu. Imagine this: pre-18th century ballet was a far cry from the dazzling, dramatic world we know today. Ballet was far more rooted in the court, in intricate dances and opulent costumes, but those gowns...oh darling, they were heavy.

It was in the 1700s that the French ballerina Marie Camargo boldly dared to shorten her skirts. And in doing so, she revolutionized ballet! It's said her groundbreaking performance shocked the Parisian audiences. Scandalous, I know! This rebellious spirit helped create the first shortened ballet skirt, the predecessor to the tutu.

But here's where things get really interesting. As the ballet moved toward a more expressive style, the romantic era (between 1830-1860) brought on the enchanting tutu "en panier. Think a full skirt supported by hoops – perfect for those airy, dramatic leaps. Think about how graceful and poetic it must have been, dancing like a billowing cloud on stage. Purely enchanting, wouldn't you say?

However, if you’re like me and your style is just a touch more modern, we then fast-forward to the mid-1800s, where a revolutionary design emerged – the "tutu plat" – a much flatter, shorter, more minimalist version. Perfect for that striking, athletic look that would forever alter the world of ballet.

I adore a good romantic tutu, darling, but I’m also a sucker for those graceful movements of Russian ballerinas that the tutu plat style so beautifully brought to the stage! It’s the perfect blend of effortless grace and strength.

And it wasn’t just about aesthetics, darling, the tutu plat, in its practical design, gave these talented ballerinas freedom and control of movement. Imagine dancing with such precise and fluid movements in such a freeing garment! Honestly, chef's kiss!

But hold on to your tutus, dear friends, the evolution didn’t stop there! In the early 20th century, we entered a new age of ballet where contemporary ballet artists like Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes, embraced a bold new look. And with it, they furthered the evolution of the tutu. Now, a world of tutus is opening up – more modern and innovative, like the "tutu pancake," which brought a new dimension of simplicity and fluidity to the performance. And then you had those superb sculpted tutus which added even more dramatic flair.

These innovations completely transformed the aesthetic of the tutu, bringing in all these textures, layers, and even asymmetric shapes, pushing the boundaries of design even further.

Fast forward to today and you see a delightful mix. Ballet costumes retain those captivating traditional designs alongside exciting new takes! In my eyes, it's an absolute fashion treasure trove! So many amazing creations!

Speaking of which, my darling readers, how amazing are today’s designers? They are bringing the tutu to new heights with vibrant colours and ingenious new materials creating those dramatic and whimsical illusions on stage. Some creations almost seem to move on their own. Simply mesmerising!

Now, to celebrate all things tutu, it's time to explore the magic of ballet itself. In this vibrant metropolis, darling, you can find performances every night of the week, be it at the renowned American Ballet Theatre, New York City Ballet, or the City Center—the options are simply divine! Just take a stroll through Times Square and soak up that radiant energy of the city. Trust me, darling, your inner ballerina will absolutely adore it.

So darling, this week’s #TutuTuesday is calling you to explore, experience, and embrace the vibrant world of ballet! You never know where the magic will take you. So, get those tutus out, grab a coffee and a croissant (or perhaps some afternoon tea!), and be sure to check out my blog, www.pink-tutu.com, for even more tutu delights.
